rib pain on lower left side

Last friday while lifting my grandson into his baby crib, I felt & heard a POP just below my breast rib area. The next morning I was in pain and went to see my Doctor. He took xray and was initially told I fractured my rib. By the following wednesday the pain extended all the way down that same side. They took more xrays and havent yet called me back with results since last wed ! When I sit or lay down the compression of the lower rib causes extra pain so bad I cry and it hurts to the touch. When standing, I can feel the lower rib float and it sticks out slightly more than the others. It feels like the rib is poking or rubbing something inside...What should I do next. This is driving me crazy and causing me to miss work way too many days...help/advise please.
