Q: Retroaortic Renal Vein

Hi--
My family doc won't refer me to a vascular surgeon for retroactive renal vein of common variation. She said that she thinks that "of common variation" means that lots of people have it and its an incidental finding. The report said right at the top "This is an abnormal test result." They found it on an MRI/CT for severe left hip, flank and leg pain. I also have scoliosis, vitiligo and hyperpigmentation indicative of a past adrenal attack, history of kidney infections, positive p-ANCA, sjogrens syndrome, PET scan showing areas of uptake in the lymph nodes in the armpits and buttocks, a swollen lympn node pressing on my jugular, and this problem, and scoliosis and back problems, past hx of TB. severe steatohepatitis with some fibrosis.

I have had spinal issues for a long time, and the neuro and I agree that my spine is not bad enough to be causing the problem, and it doesn't explain the swelling in the left leg.

I really feel this is the source of my pain and my chronic urinary tract problems. I am concerned about vasculitis due to the P-ANCA. I would like to see a vascular surgeon and get this fixed to preserve my left kidney, which is enlarged, to get rid of the swellng and pain, and to prevent problems should I need future surgery/transplant, or my scolosis makes the nutcracker syndrome worse.

I don't know how to get her to realize that this is realy bothering me. I had told my doctors prior to discovering this that I felt like something was sort of strangulated, and that the pain was different and coincided with urinary problems, but theydon't remember. It is driving me crazy with pain, both urinary and in the hip and leg. I limp and and hunched over from it. When I go to Physical Therapy to straighten my back, it makes the pain in my hip and leg unbearable.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Go find another doctor. Ask for copies of *all* your records along with the doctor's notes to be sent to your new (and hopefully better) doctor.

Once you get properly referred to a renal specialist, I would file a complaint with the medical board. I'm not saying you should sue or anything, but your doctor should have to answer for her decisions if they are incorrect. You should have the right to see a specialist, especially for the kind of symptoms you are experiencing.

Good luck. I hope you find a better doctor.

Thank you for the help. I'm so afraid I may have worse problems than I know about as well. This really needs to be checked out.
