Q: Results of a possible hormonal imbalance
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 28th, 2009
I was off my pill for about 6 months and had unprotected sex during this time. I have had my period but the last two times it arrived late (5 days the first time and 8 days the second time). My menstrual pain and cramps have also increased severely and during the last cycle was almost unbearable (especially during bowel movement). My breasts are constantly sore and tender to the touch. I am tired and irritable all the time and have strange "butterfly like" movement in my abdominal area. I am also bloated and get heartburn from almost anything (even a glass of water) At first i thought i was pregnant, so i did a home pregnancy test (when my cycle was late the first time) but it was negative. I wanted to do another test the second time my cycle was late, but started bleeding just before. I am very confused. Is there a chance i could be pregnant?

Menstruation Answer A5582
Current medical status: Bloated, heartburn, sore breasts, extreme cramps during menstrual period, lower back pain, funny "butterfly like" movement in my abdomen, tired all the time, lower abnominal pain
Current medical treatment: none

If the quantity and color of the menstrual blood and the length of the menstrual period were as usual, then you had your real periods and mennorhagia can be excluded. The periods exclude the possibility for pregnancy. The symptoms you reported might be related to a hormonal imbalance which occurs often after stopping birth control medications that contain hormones. It might take several menstrual cycles for your period to become regular again. If the bleeding continues on irregular basis, you might want to consult your gynecologist.
