Q: Restless Leg Syndrome
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 2nd, 2008
the pain in my legs is getting worse, i twitch a lot, my arms are now affected and the medication does not seem to help, I am up through the nights crying due to the pain and do not sleep much. I have also noticed numbness and tingling in my feet and hands, could the r.l.s be something else or does this condition just worsen with time.

Multiple Sclerosis Answer A4068
Given your symptoms (pains and twitching in the legs during the night, poor sleep, numbness and tingling in the feet and hands) you could be experiencing restless leg syndrome (RLS). But other diseases with the same symptoms should be excluded first because there are no specific tests that will confirm restless leg syndrome. In most cases, restless leg syndrome is an idiopatic condition probably genetically conditioned. In fewer cases RLS could be due to peripheral neuropathy, kidney failure, iron-deficiency, electrolyte misbalance, disturbed vein circulation, etc. You need several tests to confirm or exclude such primary causes for RLS: clinical examination, nerve studies (EMG) and blood tests (blood count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum iron, glucose level, kidney status, electrolytes…). Stress also contributes to RLS.
You may want to consult a neurologist about this.
