89 YO depressed woman is having reoccurring UTIs. These infections are diagosed by cultures; so they are real. This is my elderly mother, how can we prevent this in the future?

Hi and Welcome

I would recommend your mom drink plenty of water..Is she incontinent also. The reason I ask is this can add to the UTI's. Another thing that will add to them is wiping when she has a bowel movement.

I took care of the elderly and I had some patients who had repeated UTI's and now my grandmother is having them as well.

There are antibiotics that they can put her on to help prevent them from on is Macrobid that can be taken once a day for a month.

Another thing to try is pure cranberry juice. One woman I took care of her son gave her cranberry pills because she did not like the taste of the juice.

I hope she feels better soon.
Feel free to ask any questions..we also have a caregivers forum to help each other in taking care of our aging loved ones (or others post on their clients of all ages) it's a great place.
Take Care..Smile
