Q: REM when closing eyes
asked by: DoctorQuestion on October 5th, 2009
I have been having migranes for quite awhile. Generally its something that i have delt with growing up, but recently it got atypically more painful and its now significantly harder to concentrate. I start getting red, ichy, watery eyes. Furthemore, the wierd thing is that i start REM when i close my eyes. I can literally go into rapid eye movement at command, and open my eyes right after. Initially my worry was that this may be some form of coffee (caffene) withdrawal, which begs the question if i should decrease or discontinue my intake. Eitherway the REM thing is freaking me out. (should i be concerned)

Hi
Welcome to the forum
Well some people can start a rapid eye movement without any cause or underlying disease. Sometimes brain’s control over eye movements is weak. Very high near sightedness and/or far sightedness can also cause this. Brain tumors, neurological disorders, scar in retina optic nerve can all cause this. Caffeine can be a contributing factor and so can caffeine withdrawal. In your case the nystagmus (REM) could be without any cause or due to caffeine withdrawal if you have stopped it suddenly. With time this should settle down.
Headache, red itchy watery eyes, REM movements can be present together in ocular migraines or retinal migraines. Cataract and glaucoma too should be ruled out. Also get your vision tested.
It is very difficult to determine the exact cause of your symptoms on net. Please consult a neurologist and an eye specialist.
