Q: Red stain around lips

Not sure where else to post this, I'm not even sure what this is so here it goes

In 6th grade, around the winter time, I developed an orange stain above my upper lip that made it look like I had just drank orange kool-aid or ate spaghetti sauce or something all the time. I don't think it was ever dry or painful or anything like that but I can't remember it too well now. It was really embarrassing but there was nothing I could do about it so I just had to bear it. This discoloration or "stain" was about a centimeter high maybe?

So after a few months, that went away. But it happened again in 8th grade.

So it's 2 years later, once again in Winter (or late Fall). I developed a large stain above my upper lip again.... and remember this time it was very irritated. And instead of orange it was bright red. So I about an inch above my upper lip was dry, red, and peeling -- very painful. This lasted about 2-4 months. Made my first year of high-school that much more embarrassing. But after my lips stopped peeling (about February-March I guess) and weren't irritated anymore, the redness slowly went away..... except around the edges of my lips.

I believe this happened once again, yet another 2 years later, once again in the Fall-Winter months. This time it was like in 8th grade, but not quite as severe. Maybe a few millimeters of redness and peeling, rather than a whole inch .

I am now 19. It's been ~5 years since the last time it happened but the very faintly-visible red stains are still around my lips (mostly just the bottom lip now). And sometimes (but not always) when eating spicy food it burns the edges of my lips where they are stained.

So I have no idea what this is all about but I would really like to be sure it's not something dangerous, or contagious by kissing like some form of Herpes Shocked

The stains are more noticeable in a mirror than in this picture, but nobody has ever mentioned them to me so I don't think other people can see it without looking hard at my lips. I would still like to get rid of it and know that it isn't going to come back (I fear it will) or be contagious. If anyone knows what this condition is, or just a fix for the redness around my lips, or anything at all, please help me Smile thanks

Since it involves your skin I would recommend that you make an appointment with a dermatologist to pinpoint why this happens and how to reduce / elminate redness.

Keep a journal of when it happens and what you had to eat, change in personal products, etc...

This may not seem like much help but it will help with a proper diagnosis / treatment.

ok, thanks for the advice zigemyster.

Allergic reaction is something I never considered actually. But if it is an allergy, why would this stain on the edge of my lips persists after the reaction is over? :S

I guess I'll find a dermatologist

red lips
Hi, my daughter has the exact same thing. She is in the 7th grade. She hates it and has had it since the beginning of school. For about 3 years now, every fall she has problems with her lips. We can't figure out what the cause is. So frustrating!!

i have the same thing
im 15 years old and i have had the same thing for about 3 or 4 years now, i have tried soooo many different chap sticks but nothing works anymore. my lips get very red and they burn and sometimes itch. I tried polysporin and it worked for about 2 weeks. You could try that. I dont know if our condition is the same but it might but work for you longer than it did for me. It also makes the stain go away. And if you have any pain it should go away too.
