Q: red spots and scaling skin ?

Hello Ive had a problem with this sorta scaling skin and red spots on my penis for several years..It looks like red splotchy spots that and sorta scaly skin that form on the head and shaft of my penis. Its mostly near the head and sometimes further down the shaft. I notice that when masturbating the friction seems to aggravate it and make it come about. Most of the time it doesn't hurt but it can become a little painful when it gets pretty irritated. Theres also times when it seems to heal and go away almost completely. After several years of not having sex because I thought it was an STD I finally went to a GP and showed it to him. He told me that I most likely had herpes and I was pretty terrified for about a week when I waited to have the STD tests ran. I was really relieved when every test came back negative. I asked him to find out what else it could be and he told me he'd have to do a biopsy to find out. He said to do this he would have to take a slice off my penis with a scalpel and that maybe I wouldn't want him to do that because the skin on the penis doesn't always heal very well, also when I when in that time most of the scaling had gone and he said there was nothing really for him to cut off to do the test. I didn't really want to him to take a scalpel to my penis anyways. He thought it could be some sort of fungal infection but, I didn't really buy that. He prescribed me a anti fungal and steroidal cream anyways. I used the stuff and it went away but after I stopped using it it came back. I see a different GP now but haven't brought this up with him yet. I go in there and we just sorta have pep talks about getting me to quit smoking and I really don't like getting to the "so I need to show you my penis part". Lately I've become sexually active again and am concerned about what my girlfriend will think if she notices this on my penis. I still feel pretty safe though that I'm not infecting her with anything because I've been tested and we use condoms. I plan on trying to see a dermatologist when I get a chance but they always have a crazy six month waiting time. I thought that it could be psoriasis because I had an allergy test once when I was 16 and found out I had a caffeine allergy. I had the test because I was getting red spots on my hands and elbows. The doc said I was drinking too much doctor pepper and allergic to caffeine. Could this be the same thing causing spots on my penis? What should I do? I still use caffeine because Im a big coffee drinker...but no longer get the spots on my hands or elbows..Im 26

Thanks

I think your GP was correct on that it is an infection. You shouldn't have stopped your medication for it, as resistant bacteria or fungi will reappear and you will get a reoccurrent infection. It wouldn't appear to be an allergy because there's no other symptoms on other parts of your body.

You should definitely tell your girlfriend. It is not good to keep secrets like this, especially with the potential of infecting her as well.

well you right about not telling her about it. We never had the whole STD talk before sex which is something that we should have both done. I still didn't feel like I was putting her at any major risk knowing that I had been tested for all major STD's and the fact that we use the condoms.. I cant really accept your opinion that my GP was correct because theres no way you could know that. Anyways to fix this, I will tell her about it before we continue with the sex...and try again to find out what is going on with my penis..I know that some men get red spots and or similar on their penises that are not infectious and just happen..this may be wishfull thinking but why is it so hard to find out what I have? If I have anything?

and heres another thought. If I had a bacterial or fungal std, then why wouldn't my GP be able to give me a test or some means of finding out what it was for sure? Surely they can look at this sort of thing through a micro scope or something right? It seemed to me like he was blindly prescribing me the medication without really knowing what the heck I had. He even said that he wasn't sure that it was a fungal infection but that the medication would be to "cover all bases". Well it didn't kill the fungus if I had one and I used it for the length of time prescribed. I think the steroid is what made my prob go away but only while I was using it. I didn't want to keep using a steroid for long periods of time.
