My fiancee' lives in the tropics (vietnam) and is Vietnamese and is only lightly natural tanned skin and rarely goes out in the sun, she always has very bright red lips, using moisturizers and chap sticks have no effect. What are the Possible Causes other than wind and sunburn?? She has had this condition for many years.
What are the health remedies to return her lips to natural colour??
Cheers

It's possible that she's experiencing polymorphous light eruption, or PMLE. Another possible diagnosis is Actinic prurigo. Both are conditions related to exposure to sunlight. Does she get itching or spots on her lips?

Either way, the only way to get a diagnosis is to visit a dermatologist. There are tests that doctors can perform:

* Photo-testing - a small area of skin is exposed to measured amounts of ultraviolet light . If skin symptoms appear after this exposure, the test confirms that the skin eruption is sun-related.
* A skin biopsy- a small piece of skin is removed and examined in a laboratory
* Blood tests to rule out systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus) or discoid systemic lupus erythematosus

He'll first need a diagnosis to identify the possible cause for the red lips. Only then can your husband start treatment to turn the red lips back to normal.

Good luck!

Some drugs which are used to treat skin lesions that are sensitive to light include:

fluorouracil
imiquimod
diclofenac
collagenase
aminolevulinic acid

However, be sure to get a diagnosis of any condition before you start treatment!
