Hi,

First, my own experience: Three years ago I developed a yeast infection after having unprotected sex with my partner (female). A weekend at the cottage with no shower, lots of beer, and a constantly wet bathing suit contributed as well, I'm sure. I'm uncircumcised. My penis head looked red, had small red dots scattered around the head and inner foreskin, and my meatus became inflamed - characterized by red-looking "lips" protruding outwards.

I went to my doctor and got checked out, was diagnosed with a yeast infection, and was prescribed clotrimozole anti-fungal cream and hydrocortizone. After three days or so the infection cleared up; however, the meatus remained red, irritated, and inflamed.

That was three years ago, and the problem has not gone away. My meatus simply is not the same as it used to be. The level of irritation varies day to day, depending on if I've been masturbating or having sex recently, how much water I've been drinking, and generally how gentle I've been with it. Diet may be a factor too. But it never fully "heals"; there is always some degree of irritation. I used to be able to walk around with my foreskin pulled back if I wanted to, but no longer. It's too uncomfortable.

That's my only symptom. It doesn't hurt when I pee or ejaculate. There's no discharge or lesions or anything like that. Really, my biggest issue is the aesthetic value; it just looks unsightly. However, if I didn't have a foreskin to cover it during the day, it would definitely be more of a problem.

I've been to a walk-in clinic multiple times, my family doctor, and a urologist (twice). They haven't been much help, with diagnoses ranging from "it looks normal to me" to "just leave it alone for awhile and it will heal" to "put some aloe on it and drink lots of water". No real effect or solution to the problem.

I could go on with little details, but I'll stop there. There are tons of guys posting the same problem around the web and there have been no real solutions. An irritated, red looking tip of penis (the meatus) that just will not go away. Some have additional symptoms, some don't. My goal is to start an informative, intelligent thread with people having the same problem, share what we know, discuss treatments, and find a solution!

Here's my input:

THIS IS NOT AN STI. No sores, lesions, discharge, or other symptoms of any STI. I've had a few sexual partners and no one has told me that they've developed symptoms. Every single guy that posts on any forum regarding this problem brings up STIs and whether or not this is one. I've been tested multiple times, and looked at by multiple doctors, and not one has been concerned that the irritation is due to a sexually transmitted infection. I've read posts where guys think that this is "some rare form of HPV" or urethral herpes, or something like that. That doesn't make sense. Those diseases are recurring; that is, there is an outbreak, it heals, and comes back later. That's what herpes and warts do. *This* problem is chronic; that is, it is lasting. I've had this for three years, remember. No STI just remains for that long without causing other problems. STOP WORRYING. By all means, get tested and get confirmation from an expert,

After reading the forums to the point of nausea, I've come to the conclusion that this is very possibly one of two things:

1) A prostate issue. Tip of penis irritation is often a symptom of a prostate issue, as any problems shoot right up from the prostate to the nerve endings in the penis. It could be an enlarged prostate, or a tightening of the muscles around the prostate gland and urethral tract caused by my initial yeast infection.

However, the thing is that I don't have any other symptoms of a prostate issue. No pains in my lower body, no burning when urinating or an urgency to urinate more often. Plus, I am 25, and prostate issues for guys my age is rare. I plan on getting my prostate examined soon, though, and will get some answers then. I will update with any new information.

2) Candida (yeast). This might make more sense because of the initial yeast infection that started this whole problem. I could have a mild adverse reaction to yeast, characterized by an irritated meatus. The solution then would be a yeast-free diet; I have not tried this as it is a big commitment and a major dietary change. Furthermore, I don't have any other symptoms as one does with a yeast allergy. But, it's a possibility.

There's also the possibility that I simply injured my penis during sex, and it healed awkwardly. Perhaps the new skin is just more sensitive and is irritated easily. If that's the case then I guess there's nothing I can do.

So there's what I know, but I'm no expert. Please share any insight you may have and lets get to the bottom of this! Thanks for reading.

Same boat
Hi rubickhello, good stuff. There's already a long standing and somewhat updated thread on this here:

http://ehealthforum.com/health/topic109966 .html

Not that I have an issue with starting a new one, I just wish we could start a group or something so we could organize the info a bit better. There's a lot of us facing this, and I agree with you that as a group we're a lot more likely to find some answers.

A couple possiblities I've thought of; maybe it's a rare fungus, and thus normal antifungals aren't doing the trick? Another possibility I thought of is it could be due to mold, but I'd need to hear it from more people. I used to live in a rooming house where there was mold in the bathroom for a while, around the time I started getting this, curious if anyone else has. In anycase it appears whatever it is isn't sexually transmissable which is encouraging, based on what other posters have said. Anyway, same boat as you. I 'd encourage everyone to look in to some of these natural antiinflammatories out there.. There are a ton of plants, roots etc with anti inflamatory properties and maybe one of us can strike gold there. Also eating things that are antifungal-like garlic, can't hurt. Take care man, and hope we solve this.

I was diagnosed with Balanoposthitis. Had 3 days of terrible pain - especially when my underwear rubbed against it. Then I decided to go to the doctor and this is what he diagnosed. He gave me antifungal cream and put me on antibiotics. It's much better a day later and most of the redness has gone, except from the top of the head and around the rim. I'm cut. I hope this thing heals soon 'cause I can't stand the pain anymore and I can't be running around in my birthday suit forever!

Hey mate having a similar problem. Was diagnosed in Korea as having prostatis. Then took lots of meds to get rid of it. Moved back to Australia took more meds. The urologist thinks that its just me worrying too much. The tip of my head is red and the urologist doesn't think much of it. I am scheduled to put a camera up my urethra. I'm also kinda cut that this thing wont go away. It's been about 6 months now and im 24

Demented with this same problem
I've had exactly the same problem as post 1. It's driving me nuts. Multiple std checks, urologist twice, Gp 3 times. Various prescriptions with horse sized ant biopics and fucidin and other anti fungicides. Recently prescribed cortisone in ointment format.

I also find that the redness on the tip gradually extends to beneath the head under the foreskin. It's not a pretty sight.

The creams definitely help.

But I'm approaching 1 year now and I'm driven demented. I've hidden this from my wife as I'm terrified if will upset a fragile trust. Which is unfounded in this instance- but relates to a breaking of trust some 5 years ago.

The only explanation the urologist (at 150 a shot) has given me is some type of yeast infection that is stubborn.

Intercourse really makes it redden up - it's as if skin has been ripped off. Masturbation also appears to irritate.

Would love to hear of a successful treatment. Feels like a life sentence.

Hi

I have had exactly the same problem for 2.5 years now. Mine started after I played a game of soccer and forgot to use my jockstrap but instead had some loose boxers on. after an our of my exposed head rubbing on no cotton material it was pretty beat up, after a week of a lot of pain I went to the doctors who said I had been left with a yeast infection, he gave me some cream and some drugs and it went away. i am pretty paranoid so i had some STD chceks and all came back negative. Since then I have never been able to wear lose boxers without causing irritation but back in october it started getting more and more irriatated and the methus was swelling. After a few weeks of anti fungal cream a lot of protection it went down but the redness remained. I went commando for a day about 10 days ago and it kicked it off again but this time more painful than ever. My girlfriend has a recurring thrush problem (had it before I met her) and I think this may have set me off on that path. However i just can;t explain the constant irritation if wearing loose pants and the inflamation that can get pretty unsightly. I have read that vitamin E cream is good, however it just seems to irritate the general area. I have read a lot of threads but it just seems people are hitting brick walls. One person did mention an allergy to his own urine, I have sparted drying with tissue after every piss and it does help reduce irritation. Could this be possible??

I'm 24 and experiencing this same problem, was overseas last year in July and around August noticed an irritation on the tip of my penis, it kind of healed and being the paranoid person that I am I had all STD checks and all came up negative, however it still bothers me that the opening of penis is still inflamed (it's like there is red lipstick around the opening) it's so annoying, been to 2 dermatologists and 3 GPs.. some say its normal and It will heal over time, another says I have nothing worry about but it's not normal. My penis was never like this and all these bull#hit creams don't work sorry about the swearing but just shows my frustration.. it's been 7 months now and no change.. stuck and feel helpless..

Guys.... I feel your pain.. Have exactly same prob... I have been with wife for 11yrs. Yes I may not have been the most faithful husband, but, I have had sti checks. All neg. I am circumsized.. Havent worn undies since I was 15. I am 32. My wife gets urinary tract infections a lot. And thrush.. This has never bothered me before.. It was if I was immune to them.. However... We do have a fair amount of anal sex.... I do drink a large amount of beer.. In the order of 12 plus a night.... it started off as the under side of the tip of my penis being red and irritated and felt like it was rubbin on my pants with every movement... Very uncomfortable... Then oneday, I had a quickie with my wife in the afternoon with my wife under my moms house... The next day, I had a red ring around the opening of my penis that had a red line, like cellulitus, shooting back from there... I have tried lotions and potions and all soughts,of different creams. Some have little effect, some make it go away for a day or 2 and some irritate it more... I dont have pain on urination..... I have pain about 5 mins after, like I just peed acid or someone just needled me through the head of my penis..my penis is uncomfortable n red most of the time and my scotum is red aswell.

I have a similar issue. I had unprotected sex(vaginal and oral)with this chick about 4 months ago. To make a long story short, it turns out she tested positive for mycoplasma and ureaplasma. Both are similar bacterial strains and hardly ever get tested for. I was given antibiotics due to some of the other symptoms I had goin on but months later I'm left with a chronic red urrethral opening.(on top of other symptoms but this post is on red meatus opening). Here's a possibility...now I'm not sure if whoever had std/sti testing was tested for mycoplasma/ureaplasma due to it being ignored by most clinics and doctors, but its something you might wanna consider. Part of the problem I think is that many people are asymptomatic but there might be a correlation between the infection and the red urethral opening...at least in some of the cases here. Those infections are very very common, can cause serious issues in men and women, can be transmitted oraly, and still go untested for in most clinics and standard std tests. BTW...I have tested negative for myco/ureaplasma yet I continue to have leftover symptoms 4 months later. I hope this can help at least one person if not more. My life has become a nightmare and I feel for anyone dealing with this mystery diagnosis.

Redness at tip of penis
Seek medical assistance as soon as the symptoms occure.Initially I applied Betadine. My gp prescribed a single pill of Fluconazole 150mg. I had no itching or bumps on my genital. My only sysmptoms were the redness at the very tip of penis and burning sensation when urinating. All STI tests + Hep B came back negative. Burning went away after a week and a half and I applied a little Neosporine to the tip for the redness. All is now back to normal.

I've had the same for about eight months now.symptoms: redness on tip of penis and scrotum also feels warm. Been tested all neg. Went to derm specialist had a biopsy done and it came back fine except my blood vessels are a bit dilated.I tryed all kinds of home remedies non has been successful. Im now trying neosporin everytime i get a chance and a ice pack every so often and cool showers which has helped some but not fully gone away yet. I figured out so far heat and friction causes it to become more inflamed.

Similar problems, possible cure?
I have same problem for a few years now. Redness to penis tip (but uncomfortable only sometimes) i also have occasional mild stinging when urinating and a mild prostate problem (young mans prostate), im 36. havent been to urologist yet, just doctor, prostate appeared fine when checked. Doctors have done yeast infection tests that all come up negative but a naturopath told me it is most likely a yeast infection but is hard to test for. Tried yeast diet and seems to help a bit but was too difficult to stick too... No sugars, fungais like mushrooms, or bad oils and fatty foods...what a boring life. Anyway have heard taking oil of oregano combined with a balanced diet and pro biopics daily might be the correct route, so am going to try that. Will post back if there is any change.

Same issue since October of 2012. Driving me insane
The heat, humidity, sweating all causes it to become irritated and inflamed. Nothing helps. Was on diflucan for 2 weeks, antibiotics for three, creams out the wazoo! I've seriously considered suicide. I'm so depressed. Can't talk to any doctors anymore, considering I've seen two urologist, an infectious disease doctor, an allergist, two primary care physicians, an urgent care physician, two dermatologists, and a psychologist. None have given me a diagnosis, any sort of different options, and have all, in the end, written it off as nothing. They think I'm seeing things. One dermatologisthas ssuggested it may be engorged veins. But I know it can't be that. I wish it was cancer that would just take me. I'm so sick and tired of living in fear, pain, and misery.
