Q: Recurring painful lump in armpit
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 16th, 2009
I have a lump in my armpit that is reoccurring and painful. This has been going on for the past 4-5 years. It varies in size, but has gotten as as large as a quarter. It sometimes stays under the skin and sometimes erupts and there is a foul smelling discharge. I'm afraid it could be a sign of cancer. My insurance is not very good and I can't afford to go through a bunch of tests if it is not serious. Can you help?

In most cases, swollen, red, painful skin masses in the armpit area that intermittently drain pus are caused by infected sebaceous (oil gland) cysts. While this is likely the case with you, it is not possible to offer a specific diagnosis to patients over the internet, and I cannot guarantee you that this is the exact the cause of your problem.

If this problem is the result of an inflamed skin cyst, then it can be surgically removed.
