I'm 26 years old and have been having lower back pain for the last 6 years. After having my first child 6 years ago is when the pain began. I now have 3 kids and it's a lot worse. Until lately I have been able to deal with it. It starts unexpectedly. It feels like a jolt goes through my back and then I'm barely able to move. If I'm on my feet for long periods of time it starts hurting really bad. It feels like my back is pushing through my hips. Sometimes my right butt cheek has a pain (almost numbing feeling) in it that can last for a couple of days.

Sometimes I'm able to ease the discomfort by sitting down and slowly stretching to the floor. I feel some kind of release type feeling in my back and it feels much better. In order for me to function through the day I have to do this exercise about once and hour. But it does not work all of the time.

If I lay on a flat surface on my back and try to sit up straight, the pain is so severe I can't stand it. If I sit up going to the left I'm okay. While laying down I feel something in my lower back separate and I think that's why I can sit up straight or to the right.

I've been to the doctor and they sent me for x-rays which shows nothing. I have an appointment to start physical therapy next month. I'm not sure what else to do. My doc has no idea what it could be. Any advice will be helpful. Thanks in advance.

First of all, what kind of doctor are you seeing? Is this your regular doctor or a spine specialist?

If you have not seen a spine specialist, you need to see one before starting any kind of physical therapy.

X-rays provide very little information to diagnose spinal problems. the show bone and cartilage only.

Physical therapy can be helpful, but only if you have had a proper diagnosis, which sounds like you have not had.

Just because x-rays show nothing wrong, does not mean there is nothing wrong. They can not show nerves, tendons, ligaments etc.

You need to see a spinal specialist. Either an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spines only or a neurosurgeon that specializes in spines only.

It sounds like, from your description of the butt pain, that you may be suffering from nerve compression in your lumbar spine.

Only a spinal surgeon can diagnose this, with more specific testing such as an MRI and maybe some other tests, depending on what the MRI shows.

Once you have an accurate diagnosis from a spine specialist, then you can have a formal treatment plan set up for you.

Go see a spine specialist as soon as you possibly can.

Good luck

I have just been to my family doctor. I'm going back to her again this week and will ask for a referral to a specialist. I don't know how much more of this I can take. Thank you so much for your response.
