Q: Recto vaginal exam?

I posted last week about my bleeding at 16 weeks pregnant. Things are getting better but I am still having some slight bleeding and pain, so I have been asked to attend a 'recto vaginal exam' on friday at the hospital. It does give information on what this is or why a further exam is necessary ... I assume this is an internal - any more ideas?

I am now 17 weeks 3 days pregnant and keeping everything crossed that things continue to calm and baby keeps on thriving.

Thanks, Lisa

Found this:

Quote:
Part of the pelvic or gyn examination where the health care professional palpates (feels) the internal pelvic organs by inserting one gloved finger in the rectum and one in the vagina. This is the best way to detect certain abnormalities, including parts of the uterus, ovaries, and colon, and is part of a good screening for ovarian cancer.

Edited to ask: Didn't they do this when you were in the hospital?

Hiya,
No, I did have numerous vaginal exams to check on bleeding and cervix, but nothing with my rectum! I just cant see why it is relevant to pregnancy / bleeding cervix, but I guess there muct be a reason. I have googled it as well now but was hoping as a pregnancy forum you would be able to shed light on this and if it was normal practive in pregnancy as I have never heard of it.

I feel like I have lost all confidence in the system now and just keep questionning what they are / are not doing.

Thanks, Lisa

No, it's not "normal" practice with pregnancy. But because you're having complications, maybe it's one of the tests they use to determine exactly what your complication is and what is causing it.

Let us know if they find anything!

I too was having bleeding and contractions early on in my pregnancy, between 18-20 weeks. They did a recto vaginal exam on me, it's kinda like a vaginal ultrasound, they do it to see if there's any change in your cervix...obviously at this point they want to make sure it's still closed and nothing wrong, like your dialating or your cervix is soft, or I've heard some women have a shortened cervix and that's why they have complications with bleeding and stuff. It's totally painless and really quick and you get the results right away so that's a plus.

Like you said, it was nothing to worry about. I was actually pleased they were being thorough for once and not doing the 'wait and see' line again.

Well I am now 19 weeks and even though I am still bleeding, it is more spotting and there are no more clots. They think bleeding is down to cervical erosion (?) and a posterior placenta which is low. I am feeling a little better about things generally and am still on bedrest hoping to get through this with a baby at the end ...

Thanks, lisa
