Q: Recent infections and HIV?

Hello, I am going to start by saying that at one point I was very sexually active and have since stopped having any type of sexual contact entirely. The last contact I had was 3 months ago and before that it was about 2 months. I became ill around Christmas with various symptoms. I went to my family doc and tested positive for Herpes Simplex 2. Never had an outbreak but have had constant headaches and fatigue. I had alot of abdominal discomfort so I went to a GI Doctor. He diagnosed me with E. Histolytica which is an intestinal parasite that may have been exposed through sexual intercourse. I took 11 days of Flagyl and the issue came back approx a week after the Flagyl therapy. I was then refered to infectious disease specialist. My GI doc talked to the disease doc over the phone and was toldto ask me a few questions. I was asked about my sexual preference and possible exposure to HIV. I tested twice for HIV since my last possible exposure and was negative both times. Once about 3 weeks after possible exposure and another time about 2 months after possible exposure. Now I was tested again today and waiting for the results. Why would the doctor suspect that I have HIV just because of the E histolytica issue not resolving after drug therapy?

It is possible that you have more severe infection that isn't responsive to the Flagyl therapy.
Your doctor should try to combine this drug with another drugs or to use other drugs without Flagyl.
Oral, anal sex and immunodeficiency, like due to HIV, are risks for having this infection in rich and developed countries (water and food contamination is the main mode for transmission in undeveloped and developing countries).

Well, I am back on the Flagyl and awaiting my test results for HIV and also to see if the parasite has entered my blood stream. We shall see. Keeping my fingures crossed. Thanks for the answer. Anyone else have some advice?
