Q: Reasons for a hysterectomy
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 23rd, 2008
This questions is on regards to a Hysterectomy. Now i have a close friend who is going to have this procedure done here very soon. Well she thinks she is pregnant. Well she doesn't want to approach her husband with this untill she has all of her facts straight. Now she does have fybermalgia if i spelled that correctly, she has had uncountable accounts of random bleeding. So the hysterectomy is to fix all of the issues. I guess my question is what is going to happen?? She needs this procedure, but is it going to interfere with the pregnancy. Will the pregnancy halt the procedure? and if so then if she decides to continue the procedure to better her health how will the termination of the preganancy happen??

Hysterectomy Answer A4737
A hysterectomy is usually performed for problems with the uterus itself or problems with the entire female reproductive complex. Certain of the conditions treated by hysterectomy include uterine fibroids (myomas), endometriosis (growth of menstrual tissue outside of the uterine cavity), adenomyosis (a more severe form of endometriosis, where the uterine lining has grown into and sometimes through the uterine wall), several forms of vaginal prolapse, and at least three forms of cancer (uterine, advanced cervical and ovarian). A hysterectomy is also a surgical last resort in uncontrollable postpartum obstetrical hemorrhage. A hysterectomy can be performed in case of heavy or abnormal menstrual bleeding but only in women who don't intent to have more kids or if other therapies (hormones, curettage) didn't help.

It doesn't seem likely that your girlfriend is pregnant. It seems that the gynecologist excluded pregnancy before making a decision for a hysterectomy.
