Q: Reactive Hypo

After a fasting blood sugar, my doctor told me I have reactive hypo. What confuses me is that there are times I start to have a reaction in the morning...before breakfast, nothing but plain black coffee or water and medications in my system. Is that really REACTIVE?
My other big concern is how to manage it with diet. Between not being able to snack at work, and Topamax, which has majorly reduced my appetite...I don't eat as often as I should (usually not until I'm getting shaky except for "normal" meal times). Because I had a kidney stone, I should really limit my protein intake to avoid another one...but how do I then keep the hypo under control? My doc really didn't give my any suggestions for eating other than to eat several times a day.

Hello:

I'm new here but I'm pretty sure caffeine is really bad for reactive Hypoglycemia. You can check around online yourself and draw your own conclusions, but you might want to cut out the morning coffee. Bummer, I know.

Thanks for the information. I've done a fair amount of research on reactive hypo, and never found that until I specifically typed in coffee with my search. To clarify, it's typically 1-2 cups, regular mixed with decaf. The only test he did was a fasting blood glucose, and he told me I could drink plain coffee or water before the test. I drank a LOT of coffee that day to keep the hunger away until I could get in for the test....so now I'm wondering what effect it had on the result (my level was at 85). I also found out since my post that one of my meds is fructose based...not sure if that would be causing the morning drop or not.

I'm still just scratching the surface on my reactive hypo but it seems that even a little bit of daily caffeine can effect me, so yeah, it might be something you'd want to investigate further.

Hope you feel better.
