Q: Rash lasting days in toddler

My 2 1/2 year old son has what I believe to be heat rash. However it has lasted a couple days. He had a fever the first day of the rash but has not had one since. He also otherwise a healthy normal almost 3 year old! Is this something I should be worried about?

Fever can accompany heat rash because of dehydration. Keep him well hydrated. It is hard to say for certain that it is heat rash without seeing it, but it should be dissipating pretty quickly if he is in cooler temperatures. Loose-fitting clothing is a must as well.

If you haven't removed him to a cooler spot and he keeps aggravating it by playing in a warm house or in this hot summer weather, it's not going to go away.

I have my house AC to a cool 62, I have him in only a diaper and also have "naked time" with him about 3 times a day for about an hour to 3 hours depending on how well he does as he is learning how to potty train. I have changed the sheets in his bed and have a fan blowing in his room but not on him.

So his rash is gone? 62 might be a little cool for an infant to be running around with just a diaper. You still need to protect his chest. Definitely keep his sheets changed weekly. Keep him hydrated. Anytime rash presents itself with fever it is best to watch it closely. If fever continues over a day it is best to call your pediatrician.

My house is not 62, my AC is set to 62. And it is not a diaper rash I believe it is a heat rash. He only started with a fever that lasted maybe an hour but it is gone now the rash is not... I have an apt set up with his doctor for next week but I was hoping for any advice to help change the outcome before that.

I understood it not to be a diaper rash. Is the rash oozing at all? You can make him a bath with baking soda added to the water. Let him soak in it and sponge him with the water. Baking soda does miracles for the body.

Thats a good sign! Try the bath and let me know. If he still has a rash by next week do not cancel his appointment. Make sure you do keep him hydrated and dry. Good luck!

How much baking soda should I add? I do not give him a nice full bath it is maybe bellybutton high on him after he is sitting down... like a couple tablespoons? I also recently switched laundry detergent, so I bought the same one I have been using for about a year to see if maybe it was that as well...I will use that in the next load if bath doesnt work

I just realized I was answering you on another post Smile Use about 1/2 cup of baking soda in your water. Swish the water around to let it dissolve in the water. Switching laundry detergent may have been the culprit as well. You may also try making you a bath with baking soda. It helps with detoxing the body as well with rashes and sunburns.

Tried the bath, outcome same. I am going to try and switch laundry detergent and hopefully that helps. I called and tried to get the appointment moved up but they think I am overreacting, I may just take him to the walk-in clinic since they are being so stubborn.

Sometimes it may take a bit for the bath. Dont give up on it. Definitely switch laundry detergent. If he is not running a fever that is probably why they are acting that way?
