I was diagnosed with Epilepsy 13 months ago. I had a car accident that was drinking related. I quit drinking after it and a month later I had two seizures within 6 hours of eachother. I was then put on Dilantin and have been on it ever since. About 9 months ago I started drinking again, maybe once to twice a week sometimes heavy. Well I havn't had any seizure activity. But, I know what a pain in the butt it can be with a drivers license and Epilepsy. I live to drive and ride my motorcycle. I want to quit drinking to decrease my chances of another seizure. But, am wondering how to do it without a withdrawl Seizure.

If you have been drinking heavily enough to worry about a withdrawal seizure, then you need to be under a doctor's care. You also need to start going to meetings and maybe do an outpatient program to prevent this from happening again. You don't have to do this by yourself. There are people that can help you.

No, I don't drink that heavily. I don't drink because I need too, I drink brcause I want to. Sometimes I can go weeks without drinking, I just want to stop to decrease my chances of seizures. I guess what I am wondering is how long does the alcahol stay in your system and should I just stop or should I have a couple and graduly stop? Quiting not the problem it's going at it the right way.

If you've been diagnosed w/epilepsy and are taking any kind of med, then why in the hell are you still drinking? If you have seizures from alcohol withdrawal, then you have drank too much and too heavily, As long as you drink while on the meds, they won't do you much good. The alcohol will intensify the effects, the bad ones like drowsiness, slower reaction time, poor co-ordination etc. If you love driving as much as I do, the choice is simple, a drink or a driver's license. I've only had 1 drink in the last 26 years, and that was on my 50th birthday. NO SEIZURES is better than no license. I went 14 years w/o a license and besides the fact that I had lost one of my passions, I learned that people and friends get tired of hauling you around, especially if live where there is little or no public transportation.
