Q: Questions about pregnancy , amniotic fluid , and 2d ultrasounds
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 16th, 2009
Can a 2D ultrasound detect congenital anomalies? Taking 3 pills of cytotec during the 2nd month, and actually bleeding for one night will bring about drastic effect to the baby? What is the normal amniotic fluid of a 4 month fetus? What does breech and normohydramos mean?

A 2D ultrasound can detect congenital anomalies, if it is performed by a very well-educated and highly experienced ultrasonographer, who is a medical doctor and a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology. The anomalies are easiest to detect around the 20th gestational week (between the 18th-20th gestational week). Cytotec (generic name: misoprostol) is a medication that is forbidden for use in pregnant women because it could cause labor or an abortion and congenital anomalies, especially if taken in the first trimester when the organs are formed.

The bleeding you experienced might have been a sign of an unsuccessful abortion, but also of many other conditions which must be checked and confirmed by a doctor. A breech presentation is a presentation in which the baby enters the birth canal with the buttocks or feet first. Normohydramnios is a normal quantity of amnion fluid in the amniotic sac. In the first half of the second trimester (4 month fetus) amniotic fluid volume progressively increases by 10ml/day, until it reaches on average 500 ml at week 20, and 700 ml and 1000 ml in the early and mid-third trimester respectively, before decreasing to 800-900 ml at term, just before labor. However these are only averages which do not apply to every woman, thus it might be wise to consult about all these questions and issues with your doctor-gynecologist, who regularly controls your pregnancy.
