My daughter was born with two small holes (about a millimeter each in size) under her neck. And about 2 inches away from each other. A doctor did not seem to notice whenever she was born. I did notice, though, after i brought her home from the hospital. I couldn't help but to squeeze the little things. They look like indention's really. When you squeeze one, pus comes out. But, when you squeeze the other, some kind of clear liquid comes out. Neither have a bad odor. She is one year old now and still has them. I've asked our current physician, but all she tells me is to keep them clean, and it seems she has no earthly idea...(about anything i ask her, really)...am urging my husband to switch physicians, but for now i need some kind of an answer. please help?

I would take her to a dermatologist..They know more about the skin. That is strange.

Hi Dollfacemomma,

No one know their child better than momma. A child should not be born with holes in their necks. There is certainly a problem here. Please do what is in the best interest of your child...at this point by all means do get a 2nd opionion, change doctor. This should of been taken care of prior to bringing her home from the hospital. Please stop squeezing the holes and do get her treated ASAP (as soon as possible). Let us know how it comes out.

My prayers are with you.

Weird Hole on the back of the neck. Pus comes out.
My father has one on his back under his neck. It is very odd and pus comes out. As a child I would get the pus out for him and then I had stopped for about 1 year or more. A couple weeks ago I started to get some out again... and I mean ALOT! It had turned into a huge mass you could feel under the skin and he still has it. I have no idea what it is.

Hole in neck
hey dollfacemama,

I took my daughter to her doctor and she said she has whats called a Branchial cleft cyst. I noticed it too when she was born but it had something in it and thought it was a pimple and you know they what they say "don't worry if you see baby acne it's normal" So that's what I thought it was until we took her a good washing the first time and then it looked like a dimple/indentation on her neck. Well just recently her's started leaking clear fluid so we called her pedo and that's what she said. She's calling in another doctor to see her and we may need to have surgery to correct the matter before infection sets in. I heard it's worse to correct if and when infection starts. Also check to see if any one in your family has had such things before, they are genetic! My daughter got it from me, I had the same thing by below my ear and had 2 surgeries to correct it at 5. The reason for the 2 surgeries is because it got infected. Not to scare you but just make sure you see a Pediatric ear, nose and throat doctor. They will know what to do to help. I wish you the best. By the way my child is 6 months and we're in the process of figuring out if surgery is the best at her age or not. Please take care and let us know how it goes.

hole in neck...
my 23 month old daughter was also born with a "hole, enlarged pore, yada yda"in her neck sitting right on the right bone in her neck. i asked my doctor about and he also said not too worry. my 13 yr old nephew also has a hole on his R ear. his always seemed t be "crusty" as a younger child, but now, just a hole. my daughters seems to act up and ooze thick, clearish, sticky fluid, when sick. the last cpl days, allergies have been bad for us all, and there it goes... this time so far, no smell. she is picking at it this time. after the last story however... i'm thinkin i like the idea of 2nd opinion. thank you!!

Hi oteppa, I also have the same condition. I have this tiny hole also on my right neck, it moves up and down when I swallow and it secrets a white gel. My friends tells me that I was bitten by a vimpire or something and its getting annoying. I am planning to see a doctor soon to have it check and see if it can be corrected. By the way, do you know what's the medical term for this condition. thanks.

amidamaru,

I doubt that oteppa will answer you, as he hasn't posted in almost two years. But the answer to your question:

This is often a branchial cleft. (That's branchial, not bronchial). It is formed during utero, and the patient is born with it.

Good luck.

amidamaru,

No problem. My daughter actually had one on her left side. I had to do my own research about what it could possibly be, as my OB, our GP, and her pediatrician had no idea.

She finally had it removed. She had plastic surgery remove the branchial cleft cyst and tract, when she was a junior in high school.

She was so terrified, that it would start draining, when she was making out. And the boyfriend would get grossed out, while he was kissing and nuzzling her neck.

We thought it was a great deterent to dating, but, we caved in and let her have the surgery.

So, you are not alone. There are quite a few people out there with one (or two). They don't need treatment, necessarily, but can be if they become infected, blocked, or for cosmetic reasons.

Hope that has helped. Good luck.

Branchial Cleft Cysts- oozing fluid from neck/throat holes
this all has been incredibly helpful. Our child is 5 and was born w/ 2 holes at the base of his throat that has oozed clear to a yellowish green fluid- no odor. I inquired at 3 different well child visits and no Dr had ever seen it or heard of it. I researched for the 1st few years but gave up because we couldn't find out anything, it wasn't affecting his health nor had we ever experienced an infection- only once was there a small red dot. It actually stopped oozing for a long time and then it just started again, oozing a little bit more this time. I figure he has grown and they opened up again. Its great to have an actual name for it and others experiences with it. We were wondering how it will affect him in the future- adolescence & teens, didn't consider the dating scenerio- just more of the ridicule aspect. I will now inquire w/family for the hereditary link if any. My instinct has always been to keep an eye on it and do something if it changes for the worse, but don't mess with it otherwise. We'll probably consider surgery down the road after we've gotten a few opinions from the ear nose throat professionals. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Born with a hole in my neck
I know this was posted a long time ago, but I was born with a hole in my neck too. It also looked like a dimple and could really only notice it when I swallowed or when it oozed !**@! am 25 now and when I little I was the only person anyone knew including my pediatricians who had this! I was also made fun of a lot growing up for it, but thats ok! I had surgery by an Ear Nose and Throat doctor to have it removed when I was in 5th grade. I'm was never given a formal name for it probably because I was too young, but it's comforting to see its not all that uncommon. I've recently had a son and was worried it was genetic, but he didn't have it so I breathed a sigh of relief!

I was wondering if anyone has a name for this? I have one on the right side of my neck it looks like a freckle some times other times its pink this depends on whether it needs to 'leak' (clear, sticky liquid) It is some times raised (this is when there is liquid that needs to come out) other times nothing. It hurts sometimes when it is raised also.

Does anyone no? Doctors have told me not to worry about it but cant give me a name. Had it since i was born, i am now 23. I get continuous viruses and infections such as throat/ear and i am positive it has something to do with this.

Tried to research it but dont get much information back

mystery hole in the neck?
here's the deal everyone, i am 31 and have had the very same hole on the lower right side of my neck since i was born. it has no color, it's just a part of my skin an also moves up and down when i swallow and never causes me any pain or medical problems what so ever. it also leaks a small amount of clear, sticky fluid from time to time for no specific reason. my father and his mother have had the exact same hole in the same place their whole lives as well and they both have never had any problems with it either. none of us have ever found out exactly what it is, what its called or why we have them. to the mothers who are concerned about their children and these holes, if they have the same characteristics as ours, i wouldn't worry about it. if you do speak to a doctor about it and they can give you answers as to what, why, and a name for it please spread the word for others because it has boggeled us forever. i hope this helped. good luck

neck cyst
i have the same exact thing. I'm 24 years old. I've had it all my life. I went to a doctor when I was younger. never got a name for it. just that it was a cyst. doesn't hurt much. just sucks that I can't wear white shirts. when my neck leaks, leaves a messy grean stain.
when I squeeze it, I feel a "tube" like thing inside my neck.

ooz hole on neck
This is really great! I am a 31 year old male and the last time I searched for an answer over the Net was probably 5 years ago - I could not find a single answer. After reading all of the posts here, I am finally confident that it is not something that I should be concerned about.
My ooze hole is on the front part of my neck, slightly off centre to the left and just above my clavicle bone. It seems to act up when I exercise, play sports, or am simply hot and sweaty on a summer day. It is clear and odourless, and will crust up just like a clear mucous you could find at the bottom of your nose on a cold day. I first noticed it when I was about 16 when I wiped across my neck and felt the 'goo'. Then I noticed it crusted up on another occasion. I finally noticed a pattern - liquid when I worked up some body heat, dry and crusty if I didn't even notice it until later in the day following some physical activity. My fiancee and I refer to it as my 'goo hole'. Thanks everyone!

hole in neck
I'm 25 now was born with the same thing...this was noticed by docots when I was born and they tried to get my mom to let them do surgery and she didn't think god as the draw back at the time was they told my mom I'd have a scar going all the way around my neck. As long as you keep it clean no issues will come of it. At this point it is second nature to me to clean the clear fluid that comes out of it...i don't even realize I'm doing it half the time. I never had issues with infection growing up and per the doctor when I was a child this isn't the cause of repeatedly getting sick.

Sounds like a "Branchial Cleft Remnant" to me. Or more accuratly a "Branchial Cleft Sinus".

They tend to be removed to prevent infection.

I have this as well. It's awesome to now know exactly what it is and that other people also have this condition. I'm 19 years old, and it has never been infected. Has anybody had surgery to correct it that went perfectly well? Thanks!

brancial cyst
I had that on the right side of my neck next to my throat. I saw a ear nose and throat doctor about it and he wasn't able to give me an answer intill he set up another appointment so he could do some research on it. He said it was some kind of branchial cyst. It never really bothered me except for the embarrassing crust that would come out from it. I had him remove it but now i'm left with a scar on my neck. If you have it removed try to get the cut glued rather than stitched. It'll be tender for a few months but'll blend in after a year.

Hi,
I'm 22 years old and I've had a hole right in the middle of my neck all my life. I've been to doctors when I was little and they told my parents not to worry about it because it's simply a birth defect. I believe it's called a fistula which is an abnormal passageway. The clear liquid that comes out is simply saliva. Doctors recommend not touching it too often, especially with dirty hands, since the hole can get infected. You could get a surgery to close the hole but you would still have a mark left behind.
Also I wouldn't recommend washing the area close to the hole with soap since it really burns.

Hope that helps!

I was born with 2 holes in my neck one oozes a pus like substance and the other a clear liquid. They have never caused me any problems. They are genetic my dad has one and my 3 year old daughter was born with one too. Best left alone unless they become infected.
