Hi everyone,I am new to this site and I have already found it to be amazingly helpful!! I just need some support right now,I am a 34 year old female who is a type 1 diabetic(since age 11) and also has hypertension and on ACE inhibitors since 2000.My problem is this for the last few years I have had occasions where I feel discomfort in my kidneys(like a backache),have swelling in my face, legs, and ankles, and feel the constant urge to urinate, however then when I do go it is very little amounts.Sometimes only maybe 1 tablespoon, then other times it's like 3 cups!! I am currently seeing a nephrologist, only because I demanded that my MD refer me to one after my mom died 9 years ago from kidney failure at the age of 46(she was also a type 1 diabetic,no BP problems though, she also was born with 3 kidneys). So I go on Monday for a routine checkup with my nephrologist, and he tells me that I have moderate amounts of protein in my urine,I proceed to tell him about my symptoms which have once again started acting up so he does a 24 hr. urine collection, and a BMP(Basic Metabolic Panel) and I'm nervously awaiting the results.BTW my last BMP on Jan.25th showed Creat.0.8 and BUN level was 17,which are both normal, however my Creat./BUN ratio has consistently been higher than normal for a few years.I am just so scared that I have kidney failure like my mom,she didn't even get to go on dialysis, she was just keeping track of her levels,(because she couldn't afford dialysis, didn't have good ins.)Dr's keep telling me that I worry to much, that I am not my mother. However it is so hard not to be scared. Can anyone tell me what the first signs of kidney failure are? Do I have a reason to be concerned or am I just overreacting? Thank you for all your help and support.

Hi and Welcome to ehealth

I am so sorry for the loss of your mom.
It's good you are following up with your health concerns. I think you have every reason to be concerned and it's normal to be scared, you lost your mom due to kidney failure. If you are not comfortable with this doctor it might be worth getting another opinion.
Are you on a diuretic?

We are all here for you.
Hang in there..Smile

Update
I just wanted to let everyone know that my dr. called me today, the results of my tests were all normal,24 hr urine was normal too except that there was still protein in my urine. My creatinine was 0.7,he said my kidneys are fine.We are trying to figure out what could be causing my symptoms.Could it possibly be damage to my nerves to my bladder(I also have some diabetic neuropathy)He is referring me to a urologist. My protein
levels in my urine was 1700. I also only take a low dose diuretic as needed, only 18.5 mg.Has anyone out there ever heard of anyone else with these same symptoms? I've had this on/off for about 8 years, the symptoms come and go they are not constant.

Hi,it's me again,I just wanted to give you an update,I think I may have figured out the reason for the swelling in my right leg and ankle and also some of the protein in my urine.Last night my right foot was severely swollen(couldn't even wear a sock)and I looked at my foot compared to my left one and the right one was reddish-purple and it went up about 2 inches above my ankle,so my husband looked at the bottom of my foot and I have a lg. ulcerated sore on the bottom of my big toe.So dr. thinks that maybe infection caused rises in blood sugars which caused protein in urine.I was so depressed last night,I told my husband this disease is slowly killing me.In Feb. I broke my hand and had to have surgery(steel plates and screws),then starting in March the problem with my urinary tract, now in April the huge sore on my foot. And you know it is ironic that the dr's keep telling me that I am not my mother, but my sore is on the exact same foot and the EXACT same spot as the sore that she had and she developed osteomylitis(sp?)and had to have the bones removed in her toe.I hope that we caught mine in time to clear it up.But no matter what this nasty disease throws my way,I am ready to fight with all I've got.I'm not going down without a fight!!I'm only 34 and I have two wonderful teenage sons that I have to see get married and have families!! I just want to thank everyone for all of their support and reading my "books",it's just so nice to have people to talk to that understand.

We are always going to be here for you. I'm glad you found out the problem with your swelling. I hope you are going to feel better soon, you have a wonderful outlook but I know at the same time we can only take so much, after all we are human. I also get depressed from my health problems, it takes a lot out of us then we bounce back fighting harder than before.
Keep writing as many "books" as you want to, feel free to pm any of us also.
Hang in there..Smile

Hi Yolita
Have you checked out our diabetes forum yet? I noticed on your first post that you have Type 1. Having had this for so long, I know you are aware that high bs can cause problems with feet and hands, also vision and blood pressure, and kidney problems. I am type 2 and I know how hard it is keeping that sugar down! If you want to pm me any time, please feel free. Are you on insulin? Do you see a endocrinologist?

I am going through the high protein levels in urine with my 13 year old daughter. It showed up last year3+, 2 times this year a 3+, then her 24 hr count was 1797. All her other blood and urine test came back normal. She does not pee alot 2-3 times a day, but drinks alot. Also she has slight signs of edema. We are scheduled with a specialist next month. Waiting is horrible. Its nice reading your experince. I wish you well.

Hmm --- I'm so glad that I found this site..

Hi all Smile

I'm Georgette..... I've been experiencing weird urine issues the past few months -- I get chronic UTI's all the time, and the docs always treat with meds. This last time, yes, they gave me meds, but I'm not the same since. I've noticed a change in my urine output - some days it's hardly anything - some days I can't stop - Yes, I drink ALOT of water.. I'm always hydrated. I have back pain now all the time .. I'm going to a urologist tomorrow to see whats going on. I recall seeing my GYN chart 2 weeks ago, they took a urine sample and I think that they marked it as a positive to protein.. They didn't tell me otherwise, but I recall seeing the assistant right it in my chart.

Anyways - thanks for listening.. Rebecca, how are you feeling? Drop a line when you can - i'm curious of your symptoms.

Happy Health to all
