Bacterial vaginosis is a term that describes a bacterial infection of the vagina. Many types of bacteria might cause it. The bacterial vaginosis is usually caused by a disturbance in the normal vaginal flora. Antibiotics might cause it when a previous sexually transmitted disease is treated.

Therefore, people that change their partners more often are at greater risk for exposure and transmission. The most frequent symptoms might include: a white discharge from the vagina which might be accompanied with a fishy smell. Stomach pain similar to cramps might be present. Unlikely urinary tract infections, irritation, and a sensation of burning are less likely to be present unless a urinary infection is present at the same time. The treatment includes antibiotics given orally or vaginally.

You might want to visit your gynecologist for additional information and to determine the most effective antibiotic.
