Prolonged menstruation or menorrhagia Posted: 05-03-08 05:56am
My current period started in the 18th
April and is still going. It's over two
weeks now and there doesn't seem to be an
end in sight. It was the usual lighter and
red at the start but extremely sore
cramping. Last week it seemed to go more
brown in colour and stopped for 2 days.
Then it started again, very deep red but
no more heavy. I've been taking cerazette
for over a year now and take it every time
every day. Could it be that it's time to
change my pill? Thanks.

According to your description you are
probably experiencing prolonged
menstruation or menorrhagia. Menorrhagia
can be a side effect of using birth
control pills. Cerazette can cause period
changes like prolonged period
(menorrhagia), irregular bleeding
(metrorrhagia) or lack of the period
(amenorrhea). If your menorrhagia is due
to birth control pills that is functional
menorrhagia because it is due to hormonal
disturbances in the axis
hypothalamus-pituitary-ovaries.
Menorrhagia can be also due to organic
reasons like presence of infection, tumor,
endometriosis, injury, etc. It is very
important to rule out or confirm these
organic reasons for menorrhagia. For this,
you need several diagnostic procedures
like: vaginal examination, PAP-test,
microbiological smear, ultrasound scan. An
endometrial biopsy or curettage may be
required later.
If all possible organic reasons for your
problem are excluded then you may need to
change the type of birth control pills.
You may want to consult your gynecologist
about this.
