Very little laboratory data were given. Also a list of the tests that were performed to examine where the blood goes would be very helpful. The blood is either not created enough or it is destroyed more than needed. If the number of red blood cells is decreased, then the bone marrow or the spleen might be affected. The bone marrow creates the red blood cells and the spleen destroys the old erythrocytes. Also, the red blood cells might be immunologically changed and your mom’s organism attacks them and makes them more vulnerable or destroys them more than needed. If the number of the blood cells is within normal range, the iron blood levels might be decreased. There might be several reasons for this and more specific blood laboratory tests would be needed. She might not be taking enough iron, the iron might not be absorbed through the intestines properly, the proteins that transport the iron via the blood might be not so effective, the iron might not be built in the erythrocytes in the bone marrow.
In the end, she might be losing blood more intensely than the body can produce it. If this happens, all the laboratory tests would indicate lower levels (erythrocytes, hemoglobin, hematocrit, total iron in the blood, iron-binding proteins). Also, the quantity of blood as a whole would be lower. This condition might be accompanied with hypotension.
