My Mom has been losing blood for 2 years now and has recieved 32 blood transfusions in 2 years over 50 iron infusions and the doctor still doesnt know where the blood is going ang how she is loosing it. She is chronicaly iron deficient and sleeps all the time she takes Vitamin B12 shots bi-weekly and is very tired all the time i am 13 and i miss having my old active mom that did things with me instead of sleeping alot. my dad is very affected by this also and is very worried i mean her HTC is 16-18 all the time and her HGB is 7.2 it goes up and down constantly last week when she recivec 3 transfusions before her HGB was 5.4 and 3 units of blood only took her HGB to 7.2 i just want an answer to be found and her to be cured. Very little laboratory data were given. Also a list of the tests that were performed to examine where the blood goes would be very helpful. The blood is either not created enough or it is destroyed more than needed. If the number of red blood cells is decreased, then the bone marrow or the spleen might be affected. The bone marrow creates the red blood cells and the spleen destroys the old erythrocytes. Also, the red blood cells might be immunologically changed and your mom’s organism attacks them and makes them more vulnerable or destroys them more than needed. If the number of the blood cells is within normal range, the iron blood levels might be decreased. There might be several reasons for this and more specific blood laboratory tests would be needed. She might not be taking enough iron, the iron might not be absorbed through the intestines properly, the proteins that transport the iron via the blood might be not so effective, the iron might not be built in the erythrocytes in the bone marrow.

In the end, she might be losing blood more intensely than the body can produce it. If this happens, all the laboratory tests would indicate lower levels (erythrocytes, hemoglobin, hematocrit, total iron in the blood, iron-binding proteins). Also, the quantity of blood as a whole would be lower. This condition might be accompanied with hypotension.
