Q: Problems with the swallowing reflex
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 22nd, 2009
I had a tonsillectomy yesterday and am eating soft foods and drinking, but am choking on everything. It's not that it hurts, the liquids are coming out my nose, and the soft food is getting stuck behind my uvula. What the heck is going on?

Given the data you provided, it seems likely that you might be experiencing problems with the swallowing reflex. Swallowing is a complex process in which several muscles in the mouth and palate simultaneously work together in order to enable passage of the food from the oral cavity into the esophagus without returning it back to the nasal cavity. This condition might be due to the inflammation of the surrounding tissue, but a check up with an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist for a physical exam is still recommended.
