Q: Problems urinating with a catheter after surgery
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 23rd, 2008
This question is about my mother. She just had a hysterectomy on Monday, December 22. It is now over 24 hours since her operation, and she still cannot urinate. They sent her home with a catheter until Friday, December 26. Is that normal? And if so, how much longer can she expect to feel that way? If not, do you have any opinions as to what she should do? Thank you.

Hysterectomy Answer A5152
It is normal for a patient who had surgical intervention like a hysterectomy to use a catheter for urination during the first several days after the operation. If she can’t pee through the catheter there might be something wrong with the catheter itself or with the kidneys.

You could call the hospital if she can’t urinate at all.
