Q: Prescribing medications for mental or behavioral disorders
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 11th, 2009
3 years ago, I went to my doctor not being able to fall asleep. He prescribed Xanax (0.25mg to 1.0mg) at the time and I of course didn’t read up on what exactly Xanax was. 1 year later had dizzy spells. Doctor put me thru “Million Dollar” work up. All results “Normal”. Diagnosis of GAD. Given scrip for Paxil. Since then I have been on several different anxiety meds. Over the past three months, my new Doctor has gotten me off the Xanax and Lexapro. 2 weeks ago - told my Doctor I felt like 300mg Wellbutrin XL was wearing off around 4pm (taken at 6am). I was put on 150mg Wellbutrin SR (generic) twice daily. BIG MISTAKE!!! Felt worse than coming off the Xanax. For 2 days I stopped everything. I felt “normal” again and my wife even said I was my old self. Doctor then called in “Brand ONLY” Wellbutrin 150mg SR. Said effects were due to brand vs. generic. In the end I am still on the 300mg. XL. I still feel it wearing off. I do not feel depressed, anxious, scared, or anything that these drugs treat for. It all started over not being able to sleep. Do I even need to be on this stuff? Any advice would be helpful.

Mental Conditions Answer A5340
Current medical status: "diagnosed" Generalized Axiety Disorder
Current medical treatment: Wellbutrin XL 300mg.

Prescribing medications in patients with mental and behavioral disorders might sometimes take more time to learn about the patient and their condition. What you might do, is to look for a second opinion and ask the doctor for a longer period of observation. In the end, it might turn out that you do need medications, but not the one you take now, or you might only need help from psychotherapist. What will turn out to be, depends on the conclusions from the observation done by the doctor.
