Q: Preparing for pregnancy

Hello everyone,
my name is Ashlee and I'm a 22 year old girl who's in the home stretch of finishing up college, getting ready to move to Chicago with my significant other in a few months, and ready to begin our lives together! We have discussed that in the near future, say in the next year or so, we would like to begin trying to conceive a child. I come here seeking guidance because I am rather estranged from my family, and have no trusted females to talk to about this. In this time while we're trying to get things settled with our living situations, I feel that it is in my best interest to begin making sure that my body is healthy enough to handle pregnancy. In my eyes, I am relatively healthy, my weight is perfectly normal, i eat fairly balanced meals, drink plenty of water and exercise reguarly. My shots are all up to date, and Ive been keeping up with gyno visits, and I've also just quit smoking. My question here is, what do I need to be doing to prepare myself to the fullest? I know it's early on... considering we might wait more than a year, but I'd like to begin readying myself nevertheless. If anyone can give me some guidance as to good websites to read up on, or just helpful advice from people who have already been in my shoes once before! Any support would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for taking the time to read my post Smile

its great that you want to have everything set and be prepared as best as you can be before having a child.
some things you can start doing, is if your not already taking a multi-vitamin start taking one to keep you healthy, go to the gym or exercise at home to stay active, again healthy, eat healthy, you could talk to your doctor about this and see if he or she has any more suggestions too. you seem to be doing all the right things, quitting smoking is such a good thing to do too, good for you!

talk to your doctor, to see if they have suggestions on what else you could be doing to help prepare your body for a pregnancy.

i have a 5 month old and im 19, my pregnancy was not planned, but a helpful tip my doctor gave me was, this is no time to start a diet but to make sure you eat the right amount of foods, drink plenty of water, walk aroud, but take it easy.
i took a vitamin called Materna, its good to take this before getting pregnant and during pregnancy too, to make sure the baby gets the right vitamins and minerals.

thank you so much for replying to me, I really appreciate it! Something I need to be looking into though, is trying to find support during pregnancy. Im not sure what my health insurance is going to be looking like at that point. At the moment, I have a VERY good health insurance, but I am most likely going to be losing that when I make the the move to Chicago. I would need to find a new insurance through my new job when I move. But Im sure there has to be some type of help around for girls who dont have the optimum insurance plans. Any suggestions you might have?

well finding support during your pregnancy is important, and you can always look into finding someone to elp you through this by talking to your doctor as well, they might be able to help find what i think is called a midwife who will help you with your pregnancy, or you could see if an at home nurse is available to come check in on you from time to time.
your boyfriend doesnt have any family down there does he? you guys dont have friends there?
as for insurance, i would definately make sure that is taken care of first before anything, and when you apply for a job see what insurance plan is offered.
when you find your place to live ask what kind of insurance plans they offer too and maybe they would be best to advise you as to where you should apply for health insurance.
