Q: Premature ventricular contractions
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 18th, 2009
I have been having this fluttering sensation in my chest. I attatched an EKG the other day and it had noted unifocal PVC's about every 5 minutes or so. Yesterday it seemed to be more frequent or more intense when it was going on. I got a good night sleep and today it seems a little better(not noticing the feeling as often nor as intense as yesterday)...What could be causing this and should I pursue treatment further?

Premature ventricular contractions (PCV) are serious heart issues and are not supposed to be left without further diagnostic procedures and adequate treatment. Sometimes they are a result of stress, but in certain cases part of the heart muscle is damaged and produces premature ventricular contractions. You might want to visit a cardiologist. He might do a physical exam and ECG. If the results are negative, he might want to make ECG-Holter monitoring. The ECG Holter monitor records an ECG for the whole time and can give a more complete insight to the problem.

If at any time you experience severe stabbing pain in the chest for longer than a few minutes, then go to an emergency service as soon as possible.
