Q: Pregnant with lower back pain

I'm 22 years old, and pregnant, although I doubt that has anything to do with my back since I'm only 12 weeks along. Anyway, I have kaiphosis in my upper back that I hope to eventually get surgery on, on x-ray it's pretty severe, over 70 degrees, but honestly not that visible and many people do not even notice.

Yesterday my mid to lower back started hurting pretty badly. Anytime I move my head down to a certain degree, or sideways, or my arms around, I just feel pain shooting through my mid to lower back. Even sitting still it is usually painful. When it first started hurting I didn't think much of it since I would have occasional pains like that that would last about 20 minutes, then go away.

Whenever I get up it is very unpleasant, even laying down when I change positions. It feels like it's shooting through my spine, almost out into my ribs even. I took a Tylenol PM last night, but I don't think it did very much at all. I've tried using heating pillows on it, and massaging heating pillows, I've stretched on the floor (and I must admit the least painful position for me was laying straight on the hard floor), but none of this has really helped any.

I figured it would be better today, but I can't tell if it's improved at all. Any suggestions on what it could be, or advice on how to make it better would be greatly appreciated. I'm not trying to be a huge wimp, but moving around the house is even hard for me, and that's very annoying. Thanks for taking the time to read my post!

You are 3 months pregnant and it is not uncommon for some women to start to have some lumbar and thoracic discomfort at this point on.

I really don't know much about kaiphosis, but do know it is a curvature of the upper part of the spine.

I would suggest that you discuss this problem with your OB as soon as possible as well as with a spinal surgeon.

You should not be taking any medication while you are pregnant without your OB saying it is OK to do so.

Tylenol PM has bendryl in it and when I was pregnant with both of my children, my OB told me not to take any antihistamines or decongestants during my pregnancy. That was quite a long time ago though, so the information may be different now.
But you should never take any kind of meds either prescription or over the counter without talking to your OB first.

I'm just guessing at this but with the curve in your spine, I would suspect that the back pain will continue to get worse as your pregnancy progresses. Pregnancy does put a lot of pressure on the spine from the enlarging uterus as it shifts position as the baby continues to grow.

Good luck and let us know how you are doing.

Fran
