Q: Pregnant after first time ?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 3rd, 2009
I really need to figure this out... I'm stressing so much about this.

Here is all the information.

The first day of my last period was September 27, 2009.
It ended on October 1, 2009.
My cycle usually lasts 30 days from the start of one period to the start of the next.
I had sex for the first time on Octover 17, 2009. We used a condom and I am not on birth control.
I went to the doctors on the 27 of October because I had a rash and swollen throat (the doctors thought it might have been mono or strep).
They did a pregnancy test and it came out negative.
It has been a week since the test was taken and I still have yet to get my period.
I have never missed a period before.
I have been getting subtle cramps as if i were getting my period but it still has not come. I do not have tender breasts, or cravings or anythign like that, but I am still nervous that I may be pregnant.

What are the chances that I am pregnant? I really do not want to be.

Thank-you

Hi, and thanks for your medical question on eHealth's Ask a Doctor forum.

Basically you had unprotected sex on 21st day of the cycle. This is usually a safe day of a 30 days cycle. Hence chances are very less that you are pregnant if you have a cycle of 28 days and above (you have a cycle of 33 days so you could hardly get pregnant by unprotected sex on 21st day). For you to be pregnant the cycle should be around 32-34 days. Hence on Oct 27 on completion of 31 days the pregnancy test can come negative. You could repeat it now and see.

On the other hand flu and viral illness can also delay the periods. So repeat the pregnancy test. If it is still negative, then it is due to the illness. You may get the periods anytime. However since its 40 days or more, consult a gynecologist whatever be the result of the test. Hope this helps. Take care!
