Q: Pregnancy costs
asked by: nightangel73 on January 20th, 2009
Extremely eHealthy
I recently had a baby and I have here the bills of what the hospital charged to my insurance..One bill is $8,861 and other is $1,944 so adding both that would be about 11k for a normal delivery of a healthy baby. So basically they charge the insurance for every breath I took while I was there for those two days. Isn't that crazy? I realize it's a river of money runs into a hospital. No wonder it is so important to show your insurance card, they are going to charge it like there is no tomorrow.

I agree but the amount that is billed to your insurance company is not what they will pay.

Example: Your ins co is billed for $12,000. Out of that they allowed $3,000 and applied $3,000 towards your deductible. You would only be responsible for $3,000. Taking a $9,000 write-off is not unusual.

It really depends on the insurance in question, your policy and if they are in or out of network with that provider or providers.
