Q: PPH Hemerhoidectomy

I had PPH hemerhoidectomy two days ago. I am an overweight male age 63. It was done in conjuction with a colonscopy. Coming home from surgery was not too bad except that I felt a great urge to pass gas and could not.

They gave me a RX for vicodin for pain. I wasn't sure if i was in pain or not but it felt like I had to go and my rectal area was involentarilly pushing like if you have diarhea. I took the vicodin, continuing to take one tablet every 3-4 hrs. My gut continues to gurgle and bubble. If I walk around, I can expell gas which feels good.

Meals since surgery have been very light and soft: soup, canteloupe, some canned pears and scrambled eggs. This after noon, i had a small plate of spaghetti. Starting the late the evening of the surgery (Thursday) i took 2 ounces of milk of magnesia and have continued Friday and today with 2 ounce or more morning and evening.

This afternoon was my first solid passing which I was apphresnsive about but there was no pain. My stool was very soft. Not like diarhea but just little ploopy bits. Following my movement, i stepped into the shower and used a hand held with warm water to cleanse myself. It does make a mess of the tub bottom but it rinses away. I also spray with tilex afterwards. (the tub, not by butt!). For my butt, I use an RX tube of stuff that is anal antibiotic or something like that. (don't remember the name). It says to use sparingly, but I don't know how much is coming out when I squeeze the tube which has a small nozzel with holes.

I have also used this hand held shower serveral times a day in place of a sitz bath because it is difficult for me to get seated in the tub and get out. I guess this would be like a bidet excpt the warm water is soothing and cleanses any small leakage of blood. (there has only been light spotting on the pad in my underpants.) Each time I follow up my "bidet' with the tube of cream stuff.

Since my first movement, I felt the urge to go back in less than an hour and mistakenly thought it was gas. (I threw those underpants away). Now, I have been back on the toilet several times and i keep having the urge. None of my bowel movements has been significant. Just sort of brownish residue, (no blood)

Each time I have been done, it doesn't feel like I've had a satisfying movement. There is still gas gurgling in my stomach. the last time produced some sputtering, expelling of gas behind the soft stool. That was an hour ago. Now, as I type this, I feel the urge again. How often will this happen?

Certainly, I'd rather flush the toilet than throw underpants away but I wonder how often this will continue? I haven't taken a vicodin for the last 8 hrs or so because they make me shaky. I tool ibuprofen instead. I never had any real pain other than what might be spasms but not that uncomfortable.

The vicodin will probably stop the spasms or urge to go but should I do that or just run to the toilet every time. All of this is making me nervous.

By the way, if you want to know what a PPH surgery is go on Youtube and search "PPH surgery". that is how the doctor explained it to me and it appears to be a much better approach than the rubber bands my brother had done a year ago and are back again.

PPH
Hello,
I had the surgery last wednesday. So far things have been ok. I've had some bleeding...once it was really gross but other then that things seem good. I have been taking it easy for the last week and don't spend a lot of time sitting or walking around. I haven't started back at the gym yet but I have a follow up appointment this week so we'll talk about it then. Just some embarrasing history on me...I had 4th degree prolapse with large internal hemorrhoids. I bled everyday for nearly two years. The doctor was orginially going to try banding on me but once he was in there he said no way..they were too bad. So as of right now...I'm really glad I had it done and as far as pain goes...I started with vicoden for less then a day then moved on to Advil. All you really feel is discomfort and pressure. COnsidering all the horror stories I've heard about the traditional procedure this one is really nothing compared to it. My only issue is that I hope it's a permanent fix. Although my doctor said it doesn't always work that way. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Good luck in making your decision.
