Q: Post-op pain
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 18th, 2008
My 50 year old friend is 4.5 weeks post-op for a hysterectomy and a oophorectomy. She is still having moderate to severe pain. Is it just gas? She is not having an elevated temperature nor does she have an abdominal incision for the site to be red or swollen. Her pain ranges from 7-10 on a 0-10 scale. At some points she is about in tears and at others she is hunched over trying to breathe through it. the hospital that she had her surgery at does not have a 24 hour help line with a nurse nor do they offer an after hours help line. Do we need to page the on call doctor at her hospital that she had the surgery at or do I need to just take her to the ER. She keeps telling me (and herself) that it's only gas. Am I to just to leave it alone. I am a pediatric nurse and only know the basic post-op care. Please help me!

Hysterectomy Answer A5109
Current medical status: My friend is 4.5 weeks pos-op hysterectomy (50 years old).
Current medical treatment: vicodin 500 mg PRN, Aleve 400 mg PRN for pain

The lack of fever and edema at the incision site is not enough to exclude other possible complications from surgery. A bleeding deep in the abdominal cavity at the very place the surgery was performed might cause intense pain. It might even turn into acute abdomen. Inflammation in the pelvis should also be considered.

A check-up at a gynecologist is advised as soon as possible.
