I had surgery on my left ankle over 2 months ago. The doctor had to fill two small holes in the top of my thalus (ankle bone) with donor bone tissue. He also had to remove the bottom part of my leg bone to get to the ankle bone. Everything seems to be healing on schedule, regardless of the fact I have crohns disease, IBS, osteopenia, and GERD, among other things. The most recent orders I got were on Friday, March 27th. He told me to quit using both the orthopedic boot and the crutches. He wanted me to start physical therapy last Monday, the 30th, for strengthening and sensitivity in the incision. I couldn't get an appointment until tomorrow as they were booked due to spring break. I was doing fine until last Wednesday when I starting feeling even more pain than I did right after the surgery.
The pain is sharp and on the opposite of the scar from the operation. It is located in my calf, towards the side and back, on the outside. Since the procedure, I've had to shower sitting down. My ankle feels like it is tired and when I tried to cross my legs (such as a man does, with the calf on the knee) pain shot both up and down my leg at once. I was keeping the ankle elevated and iced, but I decided to lay heat on the calf and it felt so much better. The pain is also causing a dull, not throbbing, pain completely around my ankle, like where I would wear an ankle bracelet. I can sit with my legs crossed, Indian style, without pain. I called my doctor Friday morning, the day before yesterday, and he told me he hasn't encountered this type of pain post op, to go to PT and call him if the pain doesn't play out by Monday or Tuesday. I am also experiencing twinges of pain which hit all around the ankle alot like the tired feeling, then shoot slightly up me leg!
I am really scared to go to PT tomorrow. The pain is so extreme, I started to take the Talwin he gave me for pain, which is really hurting my stomach. Plus, half the time I get no relief from it and it causes heartburn. I've managed without any chemical pain relief about a week after the surgery. I can usually sleep through pain, but this is keeping me awake for days at a time until I "crash" and have been sleeping for 15, 16 hours at a time! I am completely mystified and have been searching the net for an answer all night. Can anyone out there offer any kind of answer as to what this might be? Since my doctor has no idea, I'd like a jumping off point to start with!
