Hello...I am a 47 year old man that had a inguinal hernia operation early February 2008. After 8 months I am still having a lot of pain at the incision site. The pain started right after the surgery, I have had the ultrasounds,MRI's,and CT-Scans along the way and nothing is certain. I have talked to two different surgeons and have not gotten a good response as of yet. I also have two very hard and painful nodules just above where the incision is, these are getting more and more sore as time goes on. I have read most of the topics about this. Now the last doctor that I have seen says that I have POST-HERNIORRHAPHY PAIN SYNDROME-Inguinal Neuralgia. He wants to inject me with cortisone to get rid of the pain. I am not sure this is right since no-one else knows the reason for the pain. He believes that the pain is coming from the nerve caught under the mesh screen and cortisone would solve this problem. The nodules he is not sure of but could be a stitch or scar tissue..not sure what to do at this time. It almost seems like I should have a surgeon go back in and see what is happening...
I would love to know what you think..........thanks

Hi Paulieny. I'm sorry to hear about the complications you are experiencing from the inguinal hernia operation. I read that pain or numbness in your groin area can continue for up to one year after the operation. If this is caused by an irritated nerve you may need another operation to treat it. The exact risks of the operation are specific to you and will differ for every person.

I think that a cortisone injection is a short-term solution. Is the doctor recommending anything else for the long term?

My Brother too!
My Brother is experiencing the same exact problem as you are. He has been back to the surgeon and like you wants to inject him with cortisone...(He says that he believes it is scar tissue that has formed). He told my brother that he may need another surgery but only as a last result. In the meantime my brother is in enormous pain. The level of it varies but for the most part it is there nonstop. It has been well over a year now since the surgery. Keep us posted.

POST HERNIORRHAPHY PAIN SYNDROME
This is hitting home real quick! I have been in pain ever since my surgery over 9 months ago. I had an orchiectomy, which was also considered the same as an hernia repair. All the pain, from my inguinal ring all the way along the incision. The doctors have done a CT scan and have put me through many anti inflamatories. They have done the cortizone and then referred me to a therapist saying that I need a TENS unit. The therapist does not recommend a TENS, since it is not used in the inguinal region often. Just wanted everbody to know my update, but I found a website that might have called my condition the "POST HERNIORRHAPHY PAIN SYNDROME". Please google this, and see if you are in this category.

I originally had a hernia repair on my left inguinal ring in Feb 03. After 3 years it began hurting badly so I eventually had a nerve transection. After 3 more years the pain was so bad I decided to have scar tissue removed. Two months after that I had the mesh removed. I have been through enough and still sit in pain. I can't believe this is my fate in life. Someone let me know if they find a solution.
