Q: Post hernia repair pain

I am 3 weeks out since having emergency umbilical hernia repair surgery. During the surgery, doc's 'cleaned' my bowel, in addition to the hernia repair. Once they were inside my abdomen, they discovered 'chronic infection' that has apparently been there since gastric bypass surgery in 2003 (I had alot of problems with infection following the bypass). They carved much of it out and advised more surgery may be needed. In addition to being deformed now, I am experiencing 'stabbing pain' in the area of the incision. When I cough, sneeze, or vomit, I just about can't stand the pain. Is this normal? Side note - there are 3 large masses around and in the incision areas. I have no actual feeling in those areas, the pain is 'under' those places. Thanks for your help.

Please contact your surgeon. This is something that really needs to be evaluated.
All the best.
Please update us as to what the doctor says.
Take Care

And it continues!!!
Yesterday, while cleaning my now infamous (to my niece and nephews, anyway), I noticed something "black" and "stringlike" coming from the incision. Keep in mind, this is the largest of the areas that will not heal. My ex-wife, who is an RN, looked at it and said it was a stitch. She gently tugged on it (I think for her own sadistic pleasure - not really). Surely enough, it was attached. My concern is...this stitch was nowhere to be seen until yesterday. It is still connected and has migrated from somewhere. I am not a worry-wart, by any means. Quite the opposite. But I would like for this whole dilema to be over and done with. I did make an appointment with the surgeon (his partner will be seeing me) on the 31st of July. I will keep you informed!

Thanks for keeping me updated.
It does sound like a stitch, some people's bodies reject the "dis solvable stitches" which also happens to me. They end up coming to the surface and then I call the doctor as to what he/she would like me to do, either make and appointment or cut the stitch.

How is the pain? Do you know what type of mesh was used for your repair, did they use a mesh?

It was my understanding that the surgeons intended on using a mesh patch. Once inside, though, the damage was too significant to do that. And the pain is still there. It occurred to me today that the pain I am feeling presently is the same type and degree of pain I felt when I initially noticed the knot/swelling on my stomach before visiting the ER. I certainly hope that a 'new' hernia hasn't developed. I work for a local public school system. I am lucky this all happened during summer break. However, our school year starts on August 15th. I do have 23 sick/personal days to use in the case I would need more surgeries. This is NOT how I intended on spending my summer and not how I want my return to work to be. Thanks for your concern. It is nice to see that people still care about others! Too bad the rest of the world isn't like you!

I would check with the surgeon and the hospital to see if a mesh was used. Also it would be good to have your operative reports and records from your surgery.
I hope you don't have another hernia either.

Thanks for the kind words. I've learned so much about the hernia mesh mess the hard way, as I have with many other health problems.

Keep me posted and I really hope you get better soon.

It's still early in your recovery BUT I would not hesitate to contact your surgeon. Actually it would be best to contact your surgeon, never hesitate to ask your doctor about this. So many people are suffering from hernia repairs, it's unreal the amount of people.
Was your repair done open or laporoscopic? Did they use mesh to make the repairs?

Please post back with an update on your condition.
All the best..Smile

Update
The surgeons office rescheduled my appointment as they want me to see the doc that did my repair. Yesterday, the 'bottom' of the incision (which up till now has been the best looking part of the wound) has turned beet red and is extremely warm to the touch (much more so than the surrounding areas). Today, while toweling off after my shower, I discovered a golf ball size 'knot' in my groin area (just inside my pelvis)on my right side. Also, a smaller, gumball size knot on the left side (directly across in the same location on the opposite side). These areas are painful to touch, but not otherwise. "Leaning forward" to sit up straight or stand is very painful...more so now than in the past few weeks. I again consulted the ex wife. She looked at and felt the 'knots'. She said along with the infection, she thinks infection has spread to my lymph nodes. She also warned that if the infection goes untreated and migrates any further, I will probably go septic. My life is not getting any better, ya'll. I hope my rescheduled appointment this Thursday gives me some hope. Thank you all!

My thoughts are with you duringthis unfortunate turn of events for you.
Please keep us informed.
I wish you all the best.

Did you find out about the mesh? When you see the doctor ask a lot of questions.

Do not wait until thursday. If you have an infection you should go to the Emergency room immediately especially if you think it is spreading. This is a serious matter and should be treated as one. Get to the ER, but keep your scheduled appointment with your surgeon for thursday if they don't admit you, if the infection is as bad as you make it sound you should not wait at all and is nothing to take lightly, you could die or go in to septic shock and die. Get to the ER.
