i had my appendix taken out nearly 4 weeks ago. the wound has healed well and looks fine but since the operation i have had constant diarrhea. at first i thought it was because of the antibiotics (5 day course) but it has not stopped. i have to go at least 3-4 times a day and it is starting to get really difficult to go out socially.

the last couple of days i have also been eperiencing severe pain on the right side, similar to the pain i had before the operation. could these two things be related? and what can i do to help the symptoms?

Bowel movements are commonly altered after surgery. If you received even one dose of antibiotics, you may develop several days of diarrhea after surgery.
Diarrhea associated with antibiotic use, is a watery diarrhea, that usually, appears from 1-2 days after the start of antibiotic treatment to several weeks after stopping of treatment (often stops on its own in 2-14 days after antibiotic withdrawal).
You may experience left lower abdominal pain or abdominal cramps.
Probiotics should be helpful in subsiding this symptom.
Diarrhea that is getting worse over time and is accompanied with fever, warrants medical attention.
Some patients may have pain at the incisional site up to a year or longer following the surgery, due to a nerve injury or irritation.

Consult your surgeon for the pain!
