Q: Post-appendectomy pain

My boyfriend had his appendix out the night before last and was released from hospital last night. The appendix had already burst so he's had lots of antibiotics and stuff, but he says he's still in a lot of pain (it must be significant because he always plays down how much pain he's in). He doesn't think the painkillers he's been given are effective.

Is this normal, and can we ask anyone (GP, hospital?) for stronger meds?

Extremely eHealthy
He may need to take pain medication regularly, as directed from his surgeon, for the first few days after leaving the hospital.
Usual recommendations are Acetaminophen [Tylenol] or ibuprofen [Motrin] 1-2 tablets every 4-6 hours for mild or moderate discomfort, and Acetaminophen with hydrocodone [Vicodin] or codeine [Tylenol #3] for severe discomfort.

Best wishes!

Thanks Smile

I'm not sure what tablets he's on, but they have the side-affect of causing abdominal pain, so he's decided to stop taking them as of today. [He said the pain was in the centre of his abdomen, away from the wound, and hurt more than the wound itself]. I'm worried that once it wears off the wound will hurt more, but I'll tell him to switch to Ibuprofen instead.
