Hi to all. Sorry this is long...

I've been having pain in the right upper and lower side of my abdomen and some lower right side back pain for the past 3 or so months. I've seen my primary doctor, surgical consultant, and now I'm currently seeing a gastrointerologist. Was given an x-ray, ultrasound, HIDA scan and CT Scan all turning up negative. I've had gazillions of blood tests including getting tested for H.Pylori, cancer (checked 3 months ago), food poisoning, etc all turning up negative.

When the pain started, it was off the pain scale and had to go to urgent care. They gave me the GI cocktail and it made the pain go from a 15 down to a 3 to 5. Since the pain started, I have lost 30 pounds, both due to lack of appetite and also due to fear of setting the pain off to a 15 again. When I first got the pain, it was constant. Now I get it mostly whenever I eat and sometimes on occasion it will pain me whenever it feels like it. But now the pain will not get any greater than a 2 or 3. And also during this time since the pain started and even b4, I had tons of bloating in the lower gut. Now that too has all but disappeared. If I still need relief from that, I take Donnatal. Gets rid of it in a hurry.

My primary doctor first thought it was my gall bladder and thought I might have ulcers as well and referred me to the surgical consultant. The surgical consultant prescribed the Pantoprazole which I'm currently taking for the possible ulcers. On occasion, my stool had been black and somewhat tarry and awfully smelly, but it was never consistent and it hasn't been like this as of late. A few times it even came out greenish. Lately, there has been very spotty (not all over) blood on my light brownish colored stool. Maybe it appears every three stools or so. But the blood does not show up on the toilet paper. I do however tend to get some light brownish sticky mucous on the toilet paper.

The surgical consultant thought that I'm not getting enough fiber in the diet and suggested taking Metamucil. Well, now that I'm taking it, my back pain has all but disappeared and I've noticed that whenever I skip a day of not making any stool that the lower back pain will come back very briefly, and not like before where it will last a day or 2 at a time.

Lately my diet has just been white rice, toast, bananas, eggs and similar light foods. No soda, orange juice, fruits, chocolate, fatty foods or anything else acidic anymore. Before the pain started, I used to drink an awful lot of orange juice and fruit juices since I don't drink coffee. I also used to take 800 mg of Ibuprofin every 12 hours for 6 months to treat a condition I was diagnosed with a couple of years ago called Chostochondritis. Excuse my spelling if incorrect. I no longer have this condition.

My gastrointerologist wants to give me an Endoscopy? (look down my gut) and a colonoscopy. But my health insurance is homicide and I'm hesitant to take any more tests at this time, especially since there isn't any family history of intestinal cancer.

I've only been taking the Pantoprazole for about a month and haven't really felt any significant improvement in the pain as of yet. The Surgical Consultant prescribed the Pantoprazole, and the gastrointerologist wanted to give me Prevacid, but the insurance won't cover it until I take Prilosec for a month first, which hasn't helped in the past. The next step up from Prilosec is Aciphex and then the insurance will cover the Prevacid, but unsure if the Aciphex treats ulcers and whether if it's any stronger than Pantoprazole.

Right now I want to give the Pantoprazole and/or the Aciphex a chance to get rid of the leftover pain and the blood on the stool. The blood on the stool has become more prevalent in the last couple of weeks or so (again only showing up every 3 stools or so). Before when the pain started, the blood only showed up a couple of times on the stool, but it showed up in a line cutting across the stool from top to almost bottom.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what I have or might have and whether or not I really need the Endoscopy or Colonoscopy or both?

Update for those half-curious...
I'm currently on Aciphex and while the pain has significantly deteriorated in the upper right abdomen, I still have little bitty bouts with it in the lower right a few inches above the waistline. I've stopped losing weight as I'm beginning to eat a little more each day. I had lost about 35 to 40 pounds as a result of the pain. And I'm still laying off of the acid type foods and drinks. Besides water, I only drink gatorade so that my urine doesn't come out dark because of dehydration. My doctor bills have stopped coming in the mail, which is good cause I can't afford it anymore. I applied for financial help from my medical insurance carrier and another state agency and was approved thank goodness. As mentioned, the gastrointerologist would like me to have the colonoscopy and endoscopy and while I dread having the colonoscopy, I will probably eventually get it if the insurance will cover it completely or most of it. I haven't spoken to him about it since my last visit since b4 my first message on this thread.

Other than that, there has been a change in my bowel movements. I can't seem to be able to pass stool every day like I used to. I'm still taking Metamucile and it sorta helps. Maybe it's because I'm eating less than I used to? I tried taking MiraLAX and after the second dosage, my stool had more of the spotty blood and it felt like I was making rocks. I had blood on the stool twice in a row, and then it stopped. I stopped taking the MiraLAX after seeing the bloody stool the first time. So, blood on the stool, but not on the toilet paper. A few days after that, blood decided to show up on the toilet paper for 3 consecutive stool makings, but not on the stool itself. Again, it felt like I was making rocks as I could feel the stool coming down the pike rather jaggedly, not 'smooth' I guess for lack of a better term. The stool itself has been consistently light brownish in color, firm, yet it comes out in pieces...usually it came out whole for me b4 the pain started.

The blood incident happened a couple of weeks ago. I'm still missing days of not going, but there hasn't been any blood anywhere for the last 3 stools. And the stool itself now doesn't feel 'harsh' coming down the pike and out like a couple of weeks ago. I just wish it would come out every day like it used to. Sometimes I will go twice a day or twice within a 24 hour period, but then go 48 hours after that not making anything. It's just not consistent. These last couple of days, I've tried diluted prune juice to help make me go every day and hopefully that will help change things back to making every day.

Anyway that's pretty much it. I'm gonna take the bottle of Aciphex b4 I decide what I'm gonna do next, which is a couple of more weeks until it's gone. Will check to see if anybody has anything to say and will respond if need be. Btw, my name is Rob.

I know someone who had a similar problem
About 3 months ago, an associate of mine described having similar problems. He had server stomach pains and he was afraid to eat because of the pain. At first, I thought it might be an ulcer or something like that until he described having bad stools. After being to the hospital several times only to return with a medication, less pain, and more symptoms I suggested he see an herbal doctor. He told me the herbal doctor suggested that he juice raw cabbage and drink it twice a day (raw cabbage is excellent for ulcers). They also highly recommended that he drink ACOG Herbal Master concentrated aloe vera juice (aloe vera soothes and heals) 2 times per day. He decided to do what they suggested and within 3 days he described having minimum to no pain and a better appetite. Within 2 weeks my buddy was eating more than me at lunch. He also described having much better, healthier stools. I remember him saying that when he went to buy the ACOG concentrated aloe vera juice, they were having a special on their colon cleanse product. Anyway, he got them both and the way he was looking and feeling made me go get a couple bottles of that stuff and man, it worked so well with my digestion and elimination process. I liked it because it doesn't rush you to the bathroom to poop out your intestines like other colon cleansers do Rolling Eyes . It just streamlined the process and made eliminating easier and more frequent. I now use the bathroom every day like doctors say I'm supposed to. Anyway I got it online and maybe this will help you. Hope you get it all taken care of.

Best wishes,

to herbalhealer...
At this point, they way it feels on the lower right side right now, I fear that I will have to get the colonoscopy regardless. Being 40 years old, my Gastro feels that at this age I need to start getting this done every year. I don't like it considering what a co-worker of mine went through. But in her case, her family has a history of colon cancer...

One thing that the HIDA scan revealed which might be part of my problem and which I guess I forgot to mention was that I had an injection factor of 26, which if memory serves, was the level at which the food passed from the liver? to the intestine or the amount of bile produced from the liver to the intestine? I can't remember, but anyway the bottom line was that the results indicated I had what they called a 'mildly' abnormal gall bladder. But according to the surgical consultant, it doesn't necessarily mean that I have a bad gall bladder. BUT she did say that there was the possibility what she called 'sludge' buildup, that is, tiny gallstones all rolled up together like sand which is blocking the flow of bile to the intestine, again if memory serves. At any rate, its because of this that I'm suspicious that there just might be some kind of buildup in the lower intestine or gallbladder or both that's preventing me from going regularly.

And I'm surprised that taking prune juice and MiraLAX and Metamucil and they just don't want to make me go often, nor make my stool come out soft in texture at the very least. But maybe I shouldn't be. And I still have the pain in the lower right back area whenever I go for days without not making any stool. I can't help but think the pain in the front and the pain in the back are being caused by the same thing.

I'm going to give the raw cabbage a try because the Aciphex has decreased the pain significantly, so I must have some ulcerlike conditions going on. I never buy anything on the net, but I will look up concentrated aloe vera juice and see what it's benefits are and take it from there. Thanx for the tips. Smile

update for herbalhealer...
I tried the raw cabbage for a week and it seems to have taken away most of the problem, as far as stopping all of the bleeding on both the stool and the tissue paper. It no longer feels like I'm making rocks anymore, but I still can't go every day...

I couldn't find the concentrated aloe vera juice over where I live. It may be safe to purchase over the internet, but I still don't trust giving out my personal info... I will keep looking for it locally...when I find it, how much should I take?

At any rate there is still a little tiny itsy bit of pain left in the lower right abdominal area and I'm on my second 30 day supply of Aciphex. I've gradually started to eat once again foods that are high in fiber, though they might have a lot of fat (which I tried to stay away from because of the ulcerlike conditions) and it's making me go more often, but there will still be 24 to 48 hour gaps of not going. I've just stuck to drinking water after meals and will drink diluted fruit juices between meals and it seems to not be giving me any more pain, unlike before, which is another positive sign that things are getting better, and I've gained some weight back...

At least if I go without not making for over 24 hours, the stool won't feel like I'm making rocks, which is what I totally hated and dreaded every time I'd not go for that length of time, because when that happened, blood would end up somewhere, either on the tissue or the stool. And the blood hasn't shown up now for 2 weeks, which I'm very glad that has stopped...

Again, thanks for that advice Smile and I will check back for any responses. I'm going to continue doing what I'm doing and finish the 2nd bottle of Aciphex and see how I feel at that point and take it from there.

OH Great!
There is always a natural way to heal the body. I would continue with the cabbage juice. I found out that ACOG is the only company that has the concentrated Aloe. However, it would be a great compliment to your progress. If I were you, I would get a friend to order the aloe for me because I know how you feel about giving your information out. You should't have any problems with paypal though. I'm glad you are seeing progress and please just do what you must to get off of that medication because medication will only lead to more medication; you may never be independent of it.
