Q: Possible symptoms of a miscarriage
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 15th, 2009
I'm 6 weeks pregnant, and have seen the our baby's heart beat. I now have super bad period cramps, (which are always super bad for me) and I have brown mucus coming out of me, for two days. My HCG levels went from 389 on 08/24 to 4921 as of 09/15. I start going every week to the doctor for check, but I'm really nervous and worried. Do I need to worry about miscarriage?

In general, the data you provided (6 weeks pregnant-confirmed with ultrasound scan, bad period like cramps, HCG levels going from 389 on 08/24 to 4921 as of 09/15), does not indicate a miscarriage. Many women experience period-like cramps, although they might be a sign of a miscarriage especially if accompanied with bleeding.

As a matter of fact, bleeding is the symptom that the gynaecologists are most afraid of. Every bleeding (light or heavy and even spotting) is considered risky for the pregnancy until proven otherwise. Women that experience bleeding should immediately visit a gynecologist or at least emergency medical service.

You might want to visit a gynecologist to consult about your condition (especially if the cramps are severe) and to find out more about the signs and symptoms of miscarriages.
