I was bitten by something while I slept, and awoke to an intense itching sensation. I was half-asleep, so I just scratched it thinking it was an ant or something equally harmless. When I woke up the next morning it was swollen, itchy, an angry red color, and has several small bumps surrounding a single puncture wound. There is also a tiny 'pimple' that popped up at the same time as the bite. The area surrounding the puncture is hard to the touch, but it doesn't hurt, it just itches very badly. I live in North Alabama, and did go hiking the day before I was bitten, so perhaps I picked up a spider along the way.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any input anyone can give as to what this wound might be. Thank you in advance.

It is best to have a doctor take a look at that as soon as you can. It could be a spider bite and it could be an allergic reaction to some kind of insect bite.

Either way it is very red and inflamed and could very well be infected with a cellulitus that needs antibiotic treatment.

I've had similar looking reactions to insect bites and it was infected and I needed antibiotic therapy right away.
