Q: Possible reasons for a headache
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 26th, 2008
I woke up at 8am this morning and about 2 hours later, I got a headache. At around 12:00 pm (4hrs after waking up) this headache became excruciating. I laid on my couch. My husband was texting me on my cell phone and it hurt to even look at my phone and text him back. I took 2 over the counter Aleve pills. My headache went away for a VERY short while (approximately 2 hrs after the pills kicked in), I dealt with the headache by trying to go to sleep. I was able to, but when I woke up it was still intense pain in the front of my head and it seemed to be back 10X worse than before. I ate an early dinner thinking that it would make the medicine more effective and then 2 over the counter Excedrins.
The pain faded after about 30 minutes, but came back less than 20 mins after it went away and I have had this headache ever since. It is 1:25 am and I can't go to sleep. I have had this headache for 17 hours straight. I have never had a headache last this long. What is wrong with me?

Diagnosis that has been suggested: Eurythema Multiforme - Prednisone (steroid) heals lesions and lesions eventually disappear after 2 weeks or so. Loratadine 10mg for itch and discomfort. Seem to work most of the time but have jumped back and forth from Prednisone to Allegra and back again. Many doctors are unsure of this condition, has been said to only be in 1 out of 1,000,000 people in the world.
Current medical status: NO RECENT EXAMS
Current medical treatment: NO CURRENT MEDICAL TREATMENT.

There could be many reasons for your headache but it is very hard to say, according to your description, which is the exact reason. In many cases, a headache doesn’t have any known reason (primary headache).

If your headache continues in the next few days you could consult your primary health provider for a few basic medical investigations (blood count, blood pressure, etc.).
