Q: Possible onset of menopause symptoms
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 28th, 2009
I am 53 yrs old. I have had irregular periods for 3-4years. About 2 years ago and for about every period for 1 year ,Ihad very heavy, clotting type cycles. Thy are now lightre but vary in lengthof 4-10dayss. Some cycles are normal 5 days, regular ,mild-moderate flow and other times it just spotting for days.
I have done no permanent birth control and am thinking of the Essure procedure. It just seems silly to do it if my menopause is immenent(6 mos.)
I had an FSH of 17.6 and estrogen of 42,reported recently. The longest I have been without a period is 3 months.
Do these numbers indicatre menopause may be soon? I have had the mood, weight memory issues for severaal years.

The laboratory results might indicate that you might be close to menopause. The level of estradiol is decreased and the level of FSH is close to the one characteristic for menopause. The spotting might be your last periods.

If the previous heavy periods were after several missed menstrual periods then the inner lining of the uterus might have thickened which caused heavy bleeding when the whole thick inner lining detached during the heavy periods.

I have had many of the symptoms you report related to menopause. 1.5 years ago I started taking bio-identical hormonal replacements. I really love it. All those symptoms are gone. I haven't felt better.

The troche (a lozenge) my doctor prescribes has several hormones including and estrogen type hormone, progesterone, DHEA and testosterone. I recommend that you look into it. Not all doctors do this work so you will have to look around, but more and more are, as the great results get known.
