I woke up yesterday with the most horrible UTI symptoms I have ever had. I had a UTI back in April, one at the very end of September but was having kidney pain as well. I went to the emergency room for the second one because of the kidney pain and the doctor pretty much blew it off. They did a urinalisis and it showed I did have a uti with no blood present. The uti symptoms went away after I took the antibiotics but the kidney pain never did. This time there was blood on the toilet paper the first time i went in the morning but none after that. I went to the doctor yesterday and the test showed that i have yet another uti and this time there was blood present in my urine. My kidneys are very sore when i move but not too tender to the touch. If I put pressure on the spot under my ribs in the back thats when it hurts with just touch. My doctor thinks i may have kidney stones and i am getting tested soon. His office called me today and told me that the lab said there are no signs of infection but that blood was present. So I asked her if that meant that I don't really have a uti. She told me yes. So I said all of this to ask if i don't have a uti why does it feel like i do and why is it so much more painful than usual? Can kidney stones cause these symptoms? I always thought that if you had kidney stones that it hit all of a sudden and you are in so much pain you go immediately to the hospital. Is it possible for the symptoms to come on gradually as mine have? And what will happen if I do have the stones? Will I be in this pain until they pass or do they go in and somehow remove them? I am very confused (ok, and a bit worried) Smile so if anyone could help me understand what's going on a bit better I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance for your time and knowledge. Smile

Hi

Sorry you are going through this.
It sounds like kidney stones. The pain can come and go. sometimes it will come on strong and leave you in a lot of pain, if it gets this severe you need to get to the ER, when it's at this point the stone is either lodged (blocking the flow of urine causing the kidney to swell.....hydronephrosis) or the stone is passing through the ureter.

It all depends on the size of the stone. Some stones can pass with little signs, some with a lot of pain and others are too big and may need to removed by litho or the doctor going in to remove it.
Is the doctor going to order a scan to look for kidney stones?

I've been getting stones for many years. Feel free to ask whatever questions you have.
Best wishes

Stacylady,
You wrote your post in Nov so I was wondering what your results have been since. You say you had pain in your back to the touch. Most docs would say that is unrelated due to the debth of the kidneys. Did that resolve?

I have since been diagnosed with MS and kidney and bladder problems are just some of the symptoms I have from it. I did not have a kidney stone but I have never been out of kidney pain. I do take medications that ease the pain that I have (from head to toe) though so it has become manageable and I am almost used to it by now 'shrugs shoulders' Thanks for the concern though:)
