Q: Possible causes of unconsciousness
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 1st, 2009
I'm wondering what could be the cause of my frequent fainting. I'm fainting very often. I don't eat for a while before fainting. I may have urine infection which I've had in the past, I'm not sure. I get stomache pains. I've been facing stress and lack of sleep lately. I tend to faint right after I sleep whilst I'm still lying down. I've been fainting for over 5 years often regularly but that's not always the case. I get what may be a delusion or just a dream whilst fainting. I can't move, speak or see anything although I am sometimes under the impression that I can during the faint but I'm aware that it didn't happen after the faint because I find myself still lying in my bed. I feel weak all over and I had blurry vision before my last faint which happened just a short while ago. I tend to faint every other day. I'm wondering why this is happening to me. Could there be something wrong with my liver or could it be hypoglycaemia? Should I eat more often (mini-meals) and see how it goes?

Current medical status: I keep fainting very frequently. I feel very weak. I had blurred vision before I fainted just half an hour ago. I tend to lose consciousness whilst lying down. I struggle to get up and sometimes under the delusion that I am getting up and moving around whilst I'm still in bed semi-conscious. During the faint, I am not able to speak, move or see anything that's not a delusion. I am also not 100% if they are delusions that I am moving or just a dream I am having. I am aware that those delusions/dreams are not happening once my fainting episode is over but under the impression that they are real during my faint. Sometimes I don't eat enough or don't eat for a while before I faint. I tend to fainting just after I've woken up from sleeping. This happens every other day. Recently I have faced stress and exhaustion from lack of sleep. I have been fainting for over 5 years now although I was well for some of that time. I have been fainting since I started facing mental health difficulties although I am not sure if they are related. I am also worried in case of hypoglycaemia, another urine infection or liver issues. I have not been eating too much lately. I would say probably the right amount but during my sleep of course I am not eating for a while and then I faint. It might be linked. I don't know.

Most doctors and researchers agree that a urine infection does not cause unconsciousness. Hypoglycemia might cause unconsciousness, but it is usually accompanied with a visible tremor (shaking of the extremities) prior to the fainting and it does not go away until glucose is administered intravenously. The fainting is most probably related to the mental problems you experienced. This is very likely because no medication about the delusions is administered. You might want to visit a neurologist or a psychiatrist to determine the exact diagnosis.
