Q: Possibility of pregnancy after an abortion
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 7th, 2009
I conceived on 9/6/08 and had a surgical abortion on 10/9/08.I was told that I was 5.5 weeks gestation at that time. I had minimal bleeding and cramping afterward. My period resumed in Nov and was normal in flow. Two weeks after that period ended, during ovulation, I had severe stabbing pain in the right pelvic region. My period started 2 wks later and was severe. Heavy bleeding, cramping, and several large clots. The consistency of the blood was black and thick throughout the entire period. The clots were large (size of large grapes). I've just started another period on Jan 5 and the bleeding is heavy but mostly red, and only a very few tiny (normal) clots. I have two concerns. Is it possible that the procedure only dislodged the embryo from the uterine wall and that I did not expel it until the Dec nightmare period? And two, is it possible that I could still be pregnant based on the early timing of the procedure int he pregnancy? Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

If the surgical abortion was performed by a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology in a hospital setting and with proper instrumentation, it is most likely that the abortion was done correctly, with extraction of both embryo and its surroundings as well as the thickened uteral inner lining (endometrium). If this was not a case, you would have developed a very high body temperature and maybe even sepsis, which did not happen. The “severe stabbing pain in the right pelvic region” was probably due to mittelschmerz (pain during “stronger” ovulation, happening in certain women) and changes in menstrual flow-happening due to recent hormonal “turbulations” in your organism as a consequence of a recently terminated pregnancy. Given the data you provided, the chances that you are still pregnant are extremely low, almost only theoretical. You might want to do a home pregnancy test, just to put your mind at ease.
