It is hard to say what the lump is without seeing it. According to the position you mentioned (lump under ribcage which is painful when coughing) you might be experiencing a hernia semilunaris-Spiegel. Hernia semilunaris is a type of hernia which is located along the line which is parallel with the middle abdominal line and approximately 3 cm far.

The hernia is most often found in the upper third of the line which is actually the margin of the abdominal rectus muscle stretching from the sternum to the pubic bone.

The pain is caused when coughing because the abdominal pressure is raised and more pressure is put on the intestine in the sac that belongs to the hernia.

The lump might be decreased when pushed, but the pushing might additionally put pressure and increase the pain. When the pushing stops, the lump takes its previous size.

You might want to visit a surgeon (abdominal surgeon, perhaps) to check if the lump is really hernia semilunaris-Spiegel. If confirmed with a physical examination, surgery might be needed to solve this problem.
