Pregnancy Q and A Answer A4963
Very experienced gynecologists/obstetricians sometimes choose to induce or perform preterm labor, before the end of 37th gestational week (using intravenous medicines or doing a cesarean section). But this is rarely indicated, only when the mother or baby are endangered by prolonging the pregnancy. The gynecologists are more often fighting to prolong the pregnancy until the term comes, giving special medicines to mature the baby’s lungs and make them capable of breathing.
Therefore, if there is no indication to induce labor 3 weeks earlier (when baby’s lungs might still not be ready for breathing), it is not recommended to do so, because many complications for the mother and the baby might occur.
