Q: Possibility of diabetes
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 2nd, 2009
I am 45 years old,
my brother was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 14.
i have recently stopped taking sugar in my diet a few months ago but have now more recently been getting dizzy spells, it started only when I had been sitting on my haunches and then stand up in hot areas at work, but now it seems to be more freequentley.
I have both high blood pressure and cholestral, (low good and high bad so to speak)
I also urinate freequently but battle to at time with the urge but just a trickle but need to stand for a while for this.
I have been retrenched and am not on a medical and thus reluctant to pay for tests that may not be necessary as these will be costly in SA, do you think that I have any reason to be seriously concerned.

thank you
Michael

Hello,

Your worries are seem to be quite justified, you are most likely more prone to diabetes considering that
1) You are overweight- BMI >30
2) you have a family history of Diabetes ( yr brother)
3) High Blood pressure is also a risk factor for diabetes
4) Dyslipidimea, specially the type you have may be caused by Insulin resistance occurring in diabetes.

Considering all the above and the positive symptoms that you have mentioned, it is very important that you check your blood sugar and do a urine examination to rule out urine infection. for symptomatic relief drink lots of water, and you may take spasmolytic tablets if they are allowed to be sold over the counter in your country.

It is very important for you to make appropriate lifestyle changes and loose weight. Much of your problems including High Blood Pressure and cholesterol might be solved just by loosing weight.
Consult a doctor / physician as soon as possible to initiate appropriate treatment.
Best Wishes!
